Hi Nas,
I am following up on my message this AM. I got home a while ago from a day away. The air inside
the apartment was horrendous in the living room, kitchen, dining room and of course the front
bathroom. I opened up all the doors and windows and turned on the exhaust fans. In this weather
that is not a workable strategy for even the short term.
Again, thank you for your help.
Thank you,
Cynthia Dorell

Hi Nas,
I feel so good that you are stepping in to help me.
I agree with you that it is not a good idea for me to stay in the apartment with
the smells and potential health hazards. Do you know when I can be moved
out? Hopefully that would be to the one bedroom apartment in Fanno Creek
Apartments.
Thank you,
Cynthia Dorell
I.

Hi Nas,
I have one more update. The air here really is unmanageable and I
feel I need to get out of this space right away.
I have the same bad smell strongly at the kitchen sink and the smell
has seeped into what I thought was my "safe space' in the far
bedroom and bath- despite that bedroom door being closed. This
was detected even though the bathroom door by the front door was
closed all day and the exhaust fan on in there on for hours. I have
also opened up the apartment to fresh air quite a bit today and I have
three "true hepa" air filters running throughout the apartment.
Thank you,

Hi Nas,
i want to add please to my note above that I sent to
you yesterday.
I have barely used the front bathroom for several
weeks due to the bad smell. At first I wondered if
somehow there was mildew somewhere that I couldn't
see. I scrubbed, sanitized, and checked
repeatedly. I closed the stopper in the sink and tub
to prevent any smells from coming up- but the smells
were still present and getting worse.
I went out last night for a few hours and when I came
in through my front door the nasty smell hit me right
away despite the front bathroom door being closed. I
went into that bathroom and the nasty smell was
overwhelming. I removed almost everything that I
had stored in the bathroom for fear it was picking up
that terrible smell. I don't have a great place to put
what I stored there so it is on my bedroom floor which
impedes the use of that room.
I have family members visits scheduled and I won't be
able to accommodate them as I should with one
available bathroom. I don't want to expose them to
this nasty situation.
The smell leaks into the main living space as well. I
have concerns about the safety of living here and feel
I may have to be moved while the remediation in my
attic takes place. I don't want my belongings tainted
by this smell. It is really unfortunate that this problem
2
got to such a serious condition before you started
working here. Eraticon told me a long time ago that
have rat"colonies" in the attic.
Thank you very much for your help,

Hi Nas,
I have had problems with odors in my
apartment for a few weeks at least I
think. The smell has generally been
the worst in the front bathroom, but
have also noticed in other places
including under the kitchen sink and it
radiates out from there possibly. I
tried to wait to try to get more
information, but this morning was
especially bad. I read in this article
that rodent related smells can come
down from the attic. I opened up my
apartment for at least an hour this
morning to let outside air in to try to
make the smell dissipate. I am really
beginning to think it is pest related and
I am finding it increasingly unpleasant
to live here.
Thank you for all your help,

"When Odors Cross The
Threshold
Scents from pests don't stay politely
contained to the space where they
originate. Once strong enough, they
drift into living areas, hallways, and
even attach themselves to clothing or
upholstery. The way these odors
travel often depends on airflow
patterns, temperature changes, and
the design of a property. An attic
infestation, for example, may become
noticeable on the floor below when
warm air pushes the scent down
3
through vents or cracks. Similarly, an
issue inside wall cavities might release
odors into multiple rooms at once,
making it challenging to isolate the
location by smell alone.
Over time, these odors can create an
atmosphere that feels unclean or
unsettling, even if the rest of the
property is spotless. The human nose
adapts to persistent smells, so
residents may stop noticing them as
strongly—while visitors detect them
immediately. This is part of why pest
odors can persist for long periods
before being acted upon, allowing
infestations to spread quietly behind
the scenes.
Identifying the source early can make
all the difference, not just for
eliminating the pests themselves but
for preventing long-term odor damage.
The longer these smells have to settle
into walls, floors, or fabrics, the harder
they are to remove, and in some
cases, complete odor removal may
require replacing affected materials
altogether.
Take Action Against
Suspicious Odors
Strange, persistent smells—whether
they're rotten, musty, or oily—
shouldn't be brushed off as
background annoyances. They often
point to hidden activity that's much
more than a simple nuisance. The
earlier the source is identified and
addressed, the better the chance of
preventing further property damage,
health concerns, and lingering odors
that can take over a space."
