Dear Mr. Worthen:
As you have requested, Kevin M McCormick, PE SE of Miller Consulting Engineers,
Inc. (MCE)has been asked to review the infill of an abandoned water cistern below the
foundation of the new residential addition.Based on the supplied information,this is a
bearing wall supporting a one-story wood framed structure. The roof and a portion of the
floor bear on this foundation. The design load(DL+SL+FLR LL)from the structure is
about 850 plf.
The vault can be infilled with a lean concrete mix as long as the existing water is pumped
out first. The concrete can be about 2000 psi and is to cure a minimum of 3 days before
placing the new concrete foundation. The concrete is to completely fill the existing vault.
It is also recommended that(2)#4 x 14'-0"long reinforcing steel be added to the footer
(3"clear of bottom)and(1)#4 x 14'-0"long reinforcing steel be added at the top of the
stem wall(3"clear of top)for the new foundation for the addition. Center this reinforcing
steel on the vault. This area will be the hard spot in the foundation and the reinforcing
steel will help redistribute forces.
