's.:2IN RE: ROOF EVALUATION FOR 9880 SOUTHWEST PEMBROOK STREET, TIGARD, OR I evaluated the roof for the residence located at 9880 Southwest Pembrook Street, Tigard, Oregon. The existing roof framing consists of the various rafter systems at 24" O.C. where the solar panels will be located. Attached is rafter layout provided by Auric Solar on behalf of Epic Engineering. The existing roofing material consists of asphalt shingles. I have evaluated the existing roof framing using RISA finite element analysis software. The following loads were used in the analysis of the roof framing: Dead Load 12.0 psf Solar Panels 3.0 psf Live Roof Load 20.0 psf Due to similar rafter layouts TL3 was treated as TL1. Treating TL3 as TL1 makes it conservative in the design. TL3 appears to be a repair to the rafter system because it is in an isolated location. TL3 was also treated as TL1 because it follows in the pattern specified on the attached layout. TL3 should be reinforced the same as TL1. It was found that the existing trusses do not have adequate capacity to support the additional weight of the solar panels. It is my recommendation that the roof be reinforced according to Sheet SK-1, and SK-02 in order for the roof framing to safely and adequately support the solar panels. The mounting hardware should be installed such that the loads can be evenly distributed along the rafters. It is my understanding that part of the roof structure consists of pre-engineered trusses at 24" o.c. where the solar panels will be located. Attached is the approved layout by Auric Solar indicating the location of the pre-engineered trusses. The snow load is less than 50.0 psf and the wind load is less than 120 psf. The roof will be supporting 4 solar panels in this location. Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC) 2014 Section 3111.5.3 indicates that solar panels that are installed on conventional light-framed construction with pre-engineered trusses members with a maximum spacing of 24" O.C. shall qualify as prescriptive and shall not require an engineered design.
