The existing roof framing consists of 2x12 rafters at 24" O.C. with alternating collar ties where the solar panels will be located having a total of 2025 square feet of roof area. The existing roofing material consists of asphalt shingles. There are 20 existing panels on the roof, and 26 more are being added. The following loads were used in the analysis of the roof framing: Dead load 24300 lbf(12.0 psf) Solar panels 2415 lbf(3 psf) Snow load (+ rain) 50625 (25.0 psf) International Existing Building Code (IEBC) 2015 Section 807.4 indicates that alterations to a building that result in less than 5% increase in the gravity loads may be performed without a structural evaluation of the existing building. The proposed alteration to the required loading of the structure results in a less than 3.2% increase over the current loading requirements, when including the panels already present on the roof, which is allowed by IEBC 2015. It is my recommendation that the existing trusses will safely and adequately support the solar panels. The roof attachments should be staggered such that the mounting hardware can be attached to each rafter at 48" O.C. in order for the loads to be evenly distributed along the roof. The racking should be installed per the manufacturer's specifications directly to the rafter. The attachments consist of a 5/16" or 18/8 SS lag screw with 2" minimum penetration into the rafter, centered on the member width. I can be reached at 435-654-6600 extension 123 with any questions.
