Drinking fountains or other equipment may not operate in a manner which would obstruct the minimum 6-foot width. 13. Corridors serving patient bedrooms require at least fS feet to width. 14. Corridors require smoke barrier partitions with double swing doors at 150-foot intervals arranged so that each area housing more than 36 pati nts is divided into at least two compartments. 15. Exit doors from lobbies, corridors and rooms with potential occupancies of 50 or more are required to swing in the direction of exit travel. lb. Pressure relief valves are required for all water heaters, installed either in separate water tank port or in port for hot water line. Blanton St. Aloha, Oregon 97007 Re: Meier & Frank, Washingtcn Square (PC 4492) Dear Mr. Dodge: In reviewing your letter of Nov. 21, concerning the main entry doors' hardware, we would prefer to retain the present system of securing these exterior doors during non-store oper- ating hours, as previously discussed with Jim Schroeder prior to bidding. This system involves the use of keyed deadlocks at the sill (and some heads) of each door leaf, without any visual indication of being locket'. However, if this system is unacceptable, we propose the following resolution: 1. Retain the use of the existing and new tempered glass doors as specified which are constructed with top and bottom aluminum rails. 2. Provide keyed cylinder deadlocks at the head (or sill) of each door leaf within the aluminum rail. 3. Provide micro-switch in door frame head (or sill) which would be activated when both keyed deadlocks in each pair of door leafs is thrown. This switch would in turn activate a 'lighted plastic sign reading "LOCKED" which would be located above each pair of door leafs. Sign approximately 1" high x 6" .long. 4. Provide engraved plastic sign over each bank of doors reading "THESE DOORS TO REMAIN UNLOCKED DURING BUSINESS HOURS" in letters 1" high on a contrasting background. In the first instance, and though it may he stipulated elsewhere, the system must be fully and electrically supervised both on water flow and all hand-operated valves. The supervision must be either tied in to the fire alarm center of Washington County Fire District No. 1 or to an approved central station such as A.D.T. , Honeywell , etc. As discussed in our telephone conversation of December 5 it is understood that the 2-inch main drain will be piped to spill outside the building in an area where full flow tests of the water supply may be made at normal operating pressures without causing water damage either to the building or to the surrounding landscaping. Also, confirming our telephone conversation, the dry pendant heads pro- posed for installation under the canopies of both the north entry and the west entry are not required. That is, protection of the vestibule in each instance will be sufficient to protect those two sectors. Mr. Ted Beckwith of Carson, Bekooy, Gulick and Associates, the mechanical engineering firm for this project was contacted concerning the 1-1/2 inch hose valve, etc. , shown on the base of the riser. Our review of the plans under discussion revealed only a few deficiencies with respect to fire safety regulations. However, one of these is quite significant from a life safety (for lack of a better term) point of view. That is, from our interpretation of the architectural finish hardware schedule, as discussed with Mr. Leipper of your firm, the exit doors at II the exterior will he fitted with keyed deadlocks located in the bottom style of the doors. Specifically, this includes door assembly nos. A-103, A-F; door assembly nos. A-121 , A-H; and door assembly nos. 103, A-H. This type of finish hardware, or more correctly these lock assemblies, is not acceptable and it is doubtful that the door leaves themselves will accorranodate approved finish hardware. Exit doors must be openable at all times for inmlediate exit without the use of a Fey, special knowledge or effort except that exterior doors may be fitted with keyed deadlocks if they are of the "indicating" type; that is, being readily distinguishable as being locked when in the locked position which indicates (to me) a lock assembly which is located where it is readily visible and not at floor level . This issue was addressed in item no. 2 of our aforecited plans examination report. That is, these spaces serve as a required exit corridor or conduit to the exterior for occupants of the second story and from our interpretation of the drawings we are unable to discern that this requirement will be observed. Subject to the foregoing stipulations the plans are hereby approved. One set of drawings bearing the stamps of the Washington County Building Depart- ment and this office must be maintained on the project site throughout all phases of construction and must be made available to building and fire inspectors for reference during required construction inspections. Inspection and approval of construction by a representative of this office is required prior to the cover of any new framing elements following the installation of all utility runs which will be concealed within wall , partition or ceiling space cavities; also upon completion of construction. In addition, a Certificate of Occupancy or other written instrument of acceptance must he obtained from the Washington County Building Department prior to the occupancy of this project space. We would recommend option two in light of design flexibility in the future and the low cost of such a revision. Corridor between Juniors Fitting Room and Coats & Dresses stock room 108A needs northernmost sprinkler head moved 12" minimum from wall. This corridor shown on drawing RSX-14, dated 2 April 1985. Head was shown to have been moved on this drawing but evidently never done. As-built drawing shows sprinkler in original location. 2. Move head 12" minimum from soffit drop at Juniors 102 (Byer/ Gunnie Sax) . This was shown on drawing A3 as new sprinkler head, adjacent to new soffit drop. 3. Add one head at Juniors 102 stock/office on sloping ceiling portion. Drawing A3 shows 2 new heads here, but only one was put in. As-builts show no heads, should be changed. 4. Remove ladder from easterly mall door storage pocket. •No cor2ustibles allowed in this space without sprinkler heads. Not a part of LB work. 5. 2 heads needed in Polo 105 (Ralph Launer) . Is fixtures are now constructed with un- perforated head panels, a possible unprotected area occurs under this "umbrella". 8. Move head at west entry away from exit sign 12" minimum, or move sign. UPPER LEVEL: 9. Children's Innerwear soffit drops obstruct sprinkler pattern south-east corner. Heads needed in soffit area in about 4 + places. Drawing A4 and as-builts show 2 new or relocated heads and 2 existing, but these dc not provide adequate coverage with fixture soffit drops. 10. 3 heads needed at Boy's, north side soffit drop. Drawing A4 and as-builts show 2 new heads here, but none were put in. 2 heads could possibly cover area between wall and soffit drop. 11. 1 head needed at stationery, north-west alcove. This area does not show on drawing A4 or as-builts since it was evidently done by M & F. It would be preferred to have As-builts reflect this construction. 12. 1 head needed at Domestics 208, east soffit drop. No new head shown on drawing A4 or as-builts at this soffit which was put in by LB. Occurs just north of hanging shower curtains. NEW W$BT ENTRY II 13. lea indicating tyia signs have been put in by M & F at new exterior vestibule doors. These signs are same as provided in Phase 2, put in by ADT tbru contract with M & F. IT IS IMPERATIVE THESE BE PROVIDED! Washington County has been very patient on these signs, but they do have a limit, which could become very costly to M & F. Please insure these signs are installed in absolutely no more than two weeks. Not a part of LB work. 14. Move ADT ceiling panels at west entry 12" minimum frog sprinkler heads. Items 1, 2, 3, 8 & 10 should be part of Lorentz Bruun work. Items 4, 6, 13 & 14 are not a part of LB work.
