03/12/1979 - Minutes MINUTES TIGARD LIBRARY BOARD March 12, 1979 Call to Order The regular meeting of the Tigard Library Board was called & Roll Call: to order at 7:30 P.M. March 12, 1979 by Chairman Betsy Chick. Excused: Yvonne Burgess, Jim Sidey. Reports Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as submitted. Librarian briefly reviewed the monthly report. VISTA up-date Debby Smith, VISTA worker brought an up-to-date report to the Board. Formation of a volunteer group to continue after Debby's departure remains a problem. She presented three plans to the Board for consideration: ( 1 ) CETA special project. (2) Grant funding. (3) Recruitment through Portland Volunteer Bureau which would require a $20 annual fee. Board recommended registration with the Bureau and pursuit of a grant. Debby is also working to receive donations of funds to buy more Large Print books and cassette tapes for the out reach program. OldBusiness Librarian announced that Tigard City Council had approved the M 1979-80 contract to receive serial levy funds. Librarian re- 1979-80 Contract viewed some information on various computer systems being Computer considered for circulation. Librarian reported that suggestion box for book titles is working well. Publicity Since there has been no response to the newspaper story re- questing a volunteer to help with publicity, it was decided that this might also be handled through the Portland Volunteer Bureau. New Business: Librarian explained to the Board that the staff is still working Closure against a considerable backlog,i.e. , cataloging gifts, re- vising card catalogs. Because of the small staff and the lack of a secluded work area, it is difficult to do much more than keep up with daily tasks. Rather than shorten operating hours, it was requested that the Library close for three con- secutive days, April 30, May 1 and 2 in order to clear up some of the backlog, to promote efficiency and raise staff Motion morale. Dick Bendixsen moved that this be done, stipulating that there must be sufficient advance notice to the public. Jean Carlisle seconded. Motion passed. OLA Librarian announced that the Oregon Library Association annual conference will be held at the Red Lion Motor Inn, Jantzen Beach, Portland, April 19, 20 and 21 . There will be a session be a session for Library Trustees on April 20, 9:30 - 11 :30 AM . Members of the Board will call to indicate whether or not they will attend.
