DOWN 9m4% 9 MILLION ■ Million) General ■ covers Police, • Parks and Recreation, Development, Community Events, Municipal Court, Mayor and City Council FY19 Budget Reduces Spending by 9.4 Percent The Tigard City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday, June 26, to adopt the city's Fiscal Year 18/19 Budget approved by the Budget Committee. The new $126 million budget contains reductions of more than $11 million, which includes $2.5 million in cuts in General Fund operating expenses. The city will continue to provide essential services, complete capital improvement projects, represent Tigard's interest in regional issues, as well as efficiently manage its financial resources. Reductions in the General Fund will affect Tigard Police, the Tigard Public Library, the recreation program, economic development program and social service grants. Read more... Rules of the Road: Tough New Penalties for Distracted Driving Based on a growing body of research on the dangers of using cellphones while driving, Oregon law has been revised, and toughened, over the last decade. Under the new law, effective July 1, the penalties will increase, depending on prior cellphone violations within the last 10 years and whether cellphone use "contributes to an accident." First-time offenders may face up to a $1,000 fine for their first conviction, while having three offenses over 10 years could result in a minimum fine of$2,000 and a six-month jail sentence.
