The code question was related to running an ernergency power generator conduit inside an existing 2 hour rated stair enclosure. OneComrn is proposing leasing a tenant space on the 11th floor,for its equipment room. OneComm requires a emergency power generator conduit be installed down through the building to the existing parking structure located adjacent to the building. The existing building does not provide rated chase enclosures other than stairvay and elevator enclosures. Currently, an existing emergency power generator conduit (8 various other conduits) are located in the comers of the 2 hour rated stair enclosure from a cellular equipment room located on the roof penthouse. This existing conduit exits the stair enclosure at the second a floor. GPA Architects proposes running CneComm's emergency power generator conduit along side the existing conduit in the same stair enclosure, entering at the 11th floor and exiting at the 2nd floor. Both entrance and exit of the conduit into the stair will have 2 hour rated penetrations. I inquired to George Steel and yourself, for the Tigard Building Departments interpretation of the UBC, Section 3309(c) Openings into Enclosures which covers the types of penetrations into exit enclosures. Gearae Steel stated that he did not interpret the section of the code as prohibiting OneComm's emergency power generz,or conduit vertical nun inside the existing stair enclosure and would not objec+ to its placemeni since there was an existing conduit condition already in x;- place in the stair enclosure. At that time Gazley Plowman Atkinson Architects was concerned over the interpretation of the building code that possibly prohibited the conduit inside the stairway. After conferring with you and George Steel,the interpretations was that the condur` run would be showed as long as the penetrations into the stairway were 2 hour rated. The original 12 story building was designed without vertical chaszways. After conferring with a member from Christensen Electric, it was concluded that the only conceivable means to get the 1 conduits to the bottom floor electrical room is to run them inside the existing stairway as previOL contractor: had. OneComm has asked Gazley Plowman Atkinson Architects to request the City of Tigard Building } Official place in writing the approval of the conduit nins. OneComm is concerned that all code officials are in agreement before construction begins. This concern stems from a previous experience at the First Interstate Tower located in Vancouver, Wa. where building officials agreed ^n the stairway option and during construction, the decision was reversed causing k:nnsid le additional costs.
