Tigard Public Library Board Minutes
MEETING DATE/TIME: Wednesday,May 9,2018 7:00 p.m.

1. CALL To ORDER:
Chair Katie Harris called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m.
2. ROLL CALL

3. APPROVE MINUTES
The minutes from the April 12, 2018 Board meeting were reviewed. No changes were suggested.
Motion by Mary Bogert. Second by Lonn Hoklin to approve the April 12, 2018 minutes.

4. AGENDA ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS
There were no changes to the agenda.
5. CALL TO THE PUBLIC
Lisa Henke,Library Assistant Circulation was our guest this evening.Lisa joined the Tigard Public Library
in April 2014 as a 20-hour Library Assistant in Circulation. In March 2016, she applied and was chosen
for a 32-hour Library Assistant position. She has worked with our Summer Teen volunteer program and
is also a member of our Labor Management Committee. Lisa enjoys being able to connect with patrons
about continuing education, access to resources and library programs.
The Board members asked Lisa to define the scope of the Circulation division.Lisa gave a detailed listing
of the functions in Circulation.
6. LIBRARY OPERATIONS
The April 2018 statistical report was distributed. Margaret Barnes stated the April volunteer event went
well.Nina Kung and Jean Hart were able to attend.M.Barnes updated the Board on recent and upcoming
programs, and activities staff has been working on.

7. POLICY REVIEW
A. Reference Services Policy
The Board reviewed and discussed the Reference Services policy. This policy was last reviewed on
January 14, 2015.
Motion by Mary Bogert. Second by Jean Hart to re-adopt the Reference Services policy as it is
currently written. Motion was approved unanimously.
B. Confidentiality of Library Records Policy
The Board reviewed and discussed the Confidentiality of Library Records policy. This policy was
last reviewed on January 14, 2015.
Motion by Lonn Hoklin. Second by Mary Bogert to re-adopt the Confidentiality of Library Records
policy as it is currently written. Motion was approved unanimously.
8. Discussion of Local Option Levy-
At a previous Board meeting, members discussed who would be able to help deliver the levy
information at an upcoming Farmers Market.This was revisited as members schedules have changed
since then. Lorin Hoklin will join Margaret Barnes from 10-11 at the city booth on Sunday,May 13.
A brief discussion ensued regarding details of distribution of levy materials, the levy itself, and the
upcoming election.
9. OTHER BUSINESS
Margaret Barnes thanked the Board members who attended the City Council meeting on April 17,
2018.
Margaret Barnes distributed a May 8, 2018 New York Times article to the Board. The title of the
article was "Parents Are Divided Over a Book in a Popular Student Reading Program in Oregon."
This article addresses a debut novel by Alex Gino titled"George"which is one of the books selected
to be part of the 2018-19 Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB). A brief discussion ensued.
Two Library Board vacancies have been made with the resignation of member Michelle Taylor and
alternate Martin Rubin. At the request of the Mayor, we will be conducting the application process
for a new member and alternate slated to begin in July 2018. This opening has been posted in
Cityscape,Books and Bits and there are posters with applications in the library lobby and on the 2nd
floor of the library near the elevator.
10. ADJOURNMENT
Chair Harris adjourned the meeting at 7:50 p.m. The next meeting of the Tigard Library Board is
scheduled for Wednesday,June 13, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.
