Skateboard Park Task Force
1. Meetings were held on (list dates during month)
No meetings were conducted this month.
2. Current activities (summarize):
Currently there are two major activities in process. One is the design process (discussed
below) and the second is the site selection process (discussed below).
3. Status of long-term projects:
The major long-term projects continue to be the selection of a site location for the
skateboard facility and the subsequent fundraising campaign.
SITE SELECTION
The Site Selection committee continues to try to identify more potential sites in addition
to the Fowler School site and the Clean Water Services site (CWS has indicated that they
are not in favor of a skateboard facility at their Tigard site near THS). A community
meeting will be conducted to discuss the Fowler School Site on Tigard Street. A late
September date is being considered for the meeting, which will hopefully be held at
Fowler Middle School.
This meeting will be conducted after Bill, Ed, and Dan meet with Steve Lowder and other
school district officials to discuss the Tigard Street site more thoroughly. The following is
a listing of items the City wishes to discuss with the school district (list not meant to be
all-inclusive).
1) Revisit and discuss the direction given by the School District Board and the City Council to consider making
available, approximately 3 to 4-acres dedicated to a 15K to 20K square foot facility plus auxiliary areas such as a
playground, additional parking, landscaping, portable toilets, spectator area(s), etc.
To the best of my recollection, it was stated at our last meeting on June 12 that if an agreement between the City
and the School District is reached allowing the City to utilize 3 to 4-acres, an IGA would be developed and use of
the property would be at no charge.
2) What will the status be of the portable building? Will the School District possibly own the building, and if so,
may it be used by the City for City purposes?Will there be any cost involved if the City uses the building?
3) What is the School District's position regarding the rest of the property not used for the skateboard facility, for
example,
- What is the School District's position about making some or all of the remaining property
available to private sector development of an indoor soccer facility(Marsden), etc.?
What is the School District's position about using some or all of the remaining property as a City
Community Park,which may include additional parking, additional playgrounds, athletic fields,
open space areas, basketball courts, picnic shelters, trails, restrooms, etc.
FUNDRAISING
Fundraising will be a huge challenge for the Task Force. The amount of money needed to
be raised to pay for a skateboard facility ranges from approximately$350K and upwards.
The current cost to build a skateboard facility is approximately$25 per square foot. The
$25 per square foot cost does not include landscaping, parking, utilities, etc.
DESIGN
The current conceptual design being considered is 15,000 square feet with a phase two
project calling for 5,000 additional square feet. A phase three project calls for an
additional 5,000 square feet.
We have received the renderings for the final conceptual design. We have also received
the profile renderings that will be forwarded to our insurance representatives so that they
may comment on the various design features.
