Resolution No. 17-45 CITY OF TIGARD, OREGON TIGARD CITY COUNCIL RESOLUTION NO. 17- 45 TIGARD'S STATEMENT OF UNITY RESOLUTION WHEREAS, the City of Tigard has heard from some members of out community that they have fear for the safety of family, friends, and community members;and WHEREAS, on April 25,2017 the City Council issued a Unity Statement to reassure residents that the City Council affirmed its commitment to providing a safe,welcoming and respectful environment for all who reside in,visit and pass through out city;and WHEREAS,Tigard's commitment to that environment is reflected in our vision of building,supporting,and maintaining a community where people of all ages and abilities can enjoy healthy and interconnected lives, welcoming to people of all backgrounds; and WHEREAS,the city will continue to comply with Oregon State law which prevents any law enforcement agency of the State of Oregon from using agency moneys, equipment or personnel"for the purpose of detecting or apprehending persons whose only violation of law is that they are persons of foreign citizenship present in the United States in violation of federal immigration laws";and WHEREAS, the Tigard Police Department is dedicated to creating a safe space for everyone to be able to report crimes without fear of reprisal; and WHEREAS,the city does not get involved with immigration and deportation issues of residents who are in the United States without authorization, except as required by law. NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Tigard City Council that we are committed to steadfastly supporting the public we serve, and providing excellent service to all people equally and fairly,regardless of race,religion,immigration status, sexual orientation, age or ability; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED,that the City of Tigard feels actions speak louder than words and will actively develop and lead new efforts that reach out to, and support, all residents of our diverse community. SECTION 1: We stand together,united against prejudice, fear,ignorance and hate and will work to bring our community together to maintain a welcoming environment where every person feels safe, regardless of immigration status,in accordance with Oregon state law.
