This memo is to inform you of our recommendations for changes to the original
engineering. It is our understanding the framing contractor did not follow the
prescribed portal frame detail J/0 on sheet Ob. The framing contractor has installed
the header below three (3) 2x top plates in lieu of the single plate shown. We
understand the critical part of this framing is the actual height of the door opening
being a maximum of 8'-0". The multiple plates can serve as a collector member
without increasing the height to a significant height as with a stud cripple wall. It is
our opinion the additional two (2) plates above the header does not compromise the
lateral element and is satisfactory as installed.
