My assignment was to give an initial assessment of trees located throughout the property. Below are my observations and recommendations. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call. Observations: The property consists of maples, birch, Douglas fir as well as several other species. Below, I have identified and will address trees that have issues and future concerns. 1) Armstrong maples: These trees are planted in the parking lot and bed areas throughout the complex. There are over 95-100 of these trees that range in size and trunk diameters. There are 40 to 45 trees, which I will call large, that have trunk DBH(diameter at breast height)of 14 to 18 inches. The smaller trees range in size from an 8 inch to 12 inch DBH. The majority of the large trees are planted in small island beds areas to raise and have begun to cause infrastructure damage to the curbing and asphalt. After inspecting the lower trunk and root flair, I found several trees have"stem girdling roots". Stem girdling roots are defined as roots that grow around the trunk or other roots causing strangulation. Girdling roots act like a tourniquet, restricting and cutting off the water and nutrient source, causing the tree to show symptoms of decline and will eventually lead to death. Because of the issues and concerns I mentioned above,I would strongly suggest you begin thinking of removal and replacement of these larger Armstrong maples before they cause more extensive damage. The smaller trees appear to have minimal issues and concerns at this time, but I would suggest these trees be monitored and be on a replacement program 5 to 7 years in the future. 2) Birch Trees: These trees are along both sides of the east entrance and scattered throughout the complex. A few of these trees appear to have dieback in the upper crown. I suspect the damage is caused by a flat head borer called the bronze birch borer. Systemic treatments will help suppress this insect and I would strongly recommend removing the trees with the most damage. This insect may be difficult to control and several municipalities throughout the metro area have put the birch tree on their nuisance list. 3) Douglas Fir: There is one Douglas fir near the NW corner of the Home Street Bank. The foliage in the upper crown is sparse, discolored and this semi mature tree has a live crown ratio of less than 10%. I would also recommend removing this tree. The other Douglas fir trees have no other significant issues but should be monitored annually.
