W. 72nd and Sandburg Road. Among the conditions attached to the permit was a requirement for the addition of an intermediate handrail in the center of the entry stair located at the northeast corner of the building. As I related to you in our phone conversation today we do not feel the intermediate rail is required for this condition. This letter will outline the justification for our opinion. The stair in question serves an occupant load of over 50 ar.d accordi;ig to Section 3305.b of the 1976 UBC is required to be a miniuum of 44 inches in width. Section 3305.] defines the handrail requirement. as follows; (j) Handrails. Stairways shall have handrails on each side, and every stairway required to be more than 88 inches in width shall be provided with not less than one intermediate handrail for each 88 inches of required width. Intermediate handrails shall be spaced approximately equal within the entire width of the stairway. It has been our experience with otter jurisdictions as well as with the State Fire Marshal 's office in Salem that this section is understood to only apply to stairs required to be 88 inches or wider in width. Also, all interim plan for the area designated "Phase Two" will be needed, possibly secured by a bond. The submitted irrigation plan provides adequate roverage for the landscaping plan as submitted, however, additions may be necessary to take care of landscaping additions. Signs for the businesses to be locited in the building will be silk screened on the canvas awnings and ill+zminated by fluorescent tubes behind the awning.
