Therefore, that separation wall is not of sufficient material and in the improper place to separate the woodworking establishment from the current warehousing operations. A 1-hour fire separation wall would be required between the woodworking anc the warehouse operations. However, due to the difficulty of installing such a wall in the existing construction types that you currently have employed in these buildings, it would be very difficult and extremely costly to do. Therefore, it is our opinion that the fire separation wall will ., not be required at this time. The owner of the site, Columt,i : Hardwood & Moulding is aware that some floor settlement is possible. He is also aware of the considerable extra expense to transfer the entire floor load to a piling support system. Inasmuch as the structure will only bc: a storage warehouse, he opted to use a reinforced grade supported concrete slab with the knowledge some settlement is a possibliity. Please note that the lateral loads developed at the vents are resisted by N5 hairpin bars in the slab which will be placed in a hollow I 3/4"diameter tube for a distance of 10 feet from each vent. This prevision was made to insure the integrity of +h lateral load system even in the event of some slab settlement. I did in fact sign the engineering vellums prior to printing. Hall Blvd. Tigard, Oregon Gentlemen: At your request we have performed a soils and foundation investi- gation for a proposed warehouse addition at your plant in Tigard, Oregon. We present herewith a report of our findings, c.onc] u- sions , and recommendations. Site Descrjption The site is an open, partially paved area, now used for storage of mate •ials at the southeast corner of your man- ufacturing property at 12700 S.W. Hall Blvd. in Tigard, Oregon. The building site proper is lies between a railroad spur (to the southwest) and a power substation. A tributary of Panno Creek lies to the ea t. The area was clear of obstructions at the time of our exploration. Subsurface Exploration In order to ascertain soil condtions, 4 test borings were made in the first week of November, 1979, with a truck-mounted power auger using 4-inch so.'.id fright tools. Boring locations are shown in Fig. t, attached. Samples were taken at 2. 5-foot intervals to a depth of 15 feet and 5-foot intervals thereafter using a 2-inch O.D. split-spoon sampler in conjunction with the Standard Penetration Test. The Standard Penetration Test is performed by driving a 2-inch O.D. split-spoon sampler into the undisturbed formation at the bottom of the boring with repeated blows of a 140 lb. pin-guided hammer. falling 30 inches. The num- ber of bloc required to drive the sampler a given distance is a measure of soil consistency. Samples were identified in the field, placed in sealed containers and transported to the labora- tory for further classification and testing. Soils and Geology Soils generally encountered within the pro- ject area consist of a thick sequence of alluvial deports (silts, clays and sands) known as the Wi1..lamette Sil _s, overlain S Truss-T Structures,_ inc._ November 20 , 1979 Page_ 2 in many areas by man-made fills. Specific units encountered are described as follows; 1 . Frill A unit of recently dumped industrial waste over- lies the majority of the site, with a thickness ranging from a feather edge in the western end of the building to as much as 16 feet in the eastern end. This layer contains metal refuse, sand, gravel and "slag" (presu-nbaly from the foundary to the north) . A layer of asphalt paving and gravel base course covers the western half of the building area. 2. Willamette Sil: A unit of sandy to clayey silt was pen- etrated in all borings beneath the fill layer. The consis- tency of the unit was observed to vary with depth from soft to hard and from blue-gray to mottled brown in color. Zones of a medium brown fine to medium sand were noted at depths bet%.,een 20 and 30 feet in all borings. 3. Weathered Basalt A formation of weathered basalt wes encountered at depths of 30 to 40 feet in two of the borin,l.,. This is believed to be a part- of the Boring lava. Test borings have been combined with toographic data to develop a geologic section through the site ; this is presented in Figure 2, attached. C,rounJ%iat.erwas encountered at depths of 8 to 10. 5 feet: in all borings of thi , investigation. We anticipated that this level may rise during peak rainy months. Proposed Plans for Development We understand that plans call for the construction of a single-story 30,000 square foot metal building with a structural concrete slab floor at Elev. 154 . 5. We further understand that the building will also have a single row of interior columns through the center. (N.W.-N.E. ) . Interior column loads of 77 kips are expected with exterior column loads anticipated at 20 and 30 kips (D.L. + L.L. ) . Conclusions and Recommendation From our investigation of the site we draw the following principal conclusions: 1. The existing fill and underlying soft soil may or may not be consolidated under present conditions of loading. In any event, the addition of new toads would result in renewed Com- J pression and differential settlement of the upper 20 to 30 feet of materials. ■f Truss-T Structures, Inc. November 20 , 1979 Page 3 2. All important structural loads must be transferred directly to the competent natural soil units which underlie the fill unit. This can best by accomplished by driving treated timber. piles. Treated timber piling would function as adhesion elements in the silt and as end-bearing elements in the weathered basalt. Piling driven to the basalt could be loaded to 35 tons each ; these would probably vary in length from 30 ft to as much as 40 ft. Piling to be loaded to this value should be driven to a resistance of 30 blows for the last 6 inches, with a hammer having a driving energy of 15,000 ft lbs per blow. 3. The use of grade-supported floor slab, would involve some degree of calculated risk, particularly in areas where site fills would be used in preparing the bu ',lding subgr.ade. In order to be completely certain that differential settlement f a grade-supported slab does not occur it would be necses- sar.y to provide sufficient reinforcing to transmit all floor loads to the piling support system. 4. All retaining walls should be backfilled with sulect free-draining granular material, and provided with a perfor- ated drain pipe. Retaining walls, footings, etc. may be de- signed to support a material having an equivalent fluid pres- sure of 35 pcf. 5. Settlement-tolerant structures (such as walks, parking, etc. ) may be supported on the fill which exists throughout the western portion of the site. 6. Asphalt Pavement We recommend that asphalt pavements be designed as Class 7 for entrance and service roads, and Class 5, for parking and all other areas. Pavement section should be designed for a CBR of 4 , which Y-­-Ids the following recommended thickness in accordance to Asphalt Institute Manual MS1: Thickness Class 7 C13ss 5 Asphalt Pavement 3 'in. 2 In. (Ore. St . Class C) Crushed Rock Base 12 In. 8 in. (Oregon St. Spec. ) Prior to placing base cc...rse the suhgrade should be proof- rolled with a loaded dump truck to detect areas or pockets of unusually soft material.. These should then be excavated and replaced with suitable compacted fill.
