This letter is to serve as notice that the Timjoist Roof Trusses in the Durham Business Center Building have been reinforced according to the plans prepared by me. As reinfcrced, these trusses are expected to provide a reasonable degree of safety for the support of code stipulated roof loading. It should be noted that the Timjoist product has experienced significant difficulties in other buildings , and that the reinforcing specified and performed is intended to reduce the risk of unexplained structural non-performance by the trusses. Because of the lack of certainty of the structural integrity of the trusses, even as reinfrrced, the trusses should be examined periodically (yearly for the first few years and at longer intervals thereafter) to verify that the unreinforced joints have not separated. W. 85th Avenue Building B and C Attention: Hawk I met today with your employee Jeff Hurd, and together we performed an interim examination of the reinforcing for the Timioist roof trusses in buildings B and C. The work appears to be about 90% complete. The reinforcing is proceeding in a workmanlike manner. In some cases , these trusses have loads that are supported by the bottom chords . All of these loads, in excess of fifty pounds per truss , should be removed from the trusses . Where the trusses support overhead garage door track assemblies , the trusses are to be gusseted on each side: of the trusses at each bottom panel point on each side of the load application point, and at the top chord panel point that is located between the two bottom chord panel points that are to be reinforced. W. 85th Tigard , Oregon Owners: Tigard Street Investments Dear Brad : I have examined some of the trusses at the Durham Hall Business Park and have obtained the original calculations and truss shop drawiligs fr-Om the fabricator . After reviewing the original calculations and shop drawings, we ran Our Own computer analysis modeling the trusses as plain frames and evaluating the resulting ro cross grain tension stresses at the diagonal /=hord splices. Based on our evaluation of the trusses to date, and based on a meeting with a number of other Structural Engineers who have some familiarity with the trusses, we have concluded that a reasonable reinforcing of the truss is as indicated on the enclosed drawings. Where we indicate a reinforced joint , and where there already exists a factory_ installed gusseted Joint we do not intend to do any additional gusseting or reinforcing to that joint . A detailed joint by joint inspection of each truss is still to be performed . This inspection is time consuming , awkward , and necessary . If we find a failed or separated joint in any truss, then that entire truss is to be gusseted . Our experience to date, based on examining other trusses in other buildirgs, indicates that a flawed joint is very difficult to observe. We recommend the use of the low lighting condition with a light source on one side of the truss and ari observer on the other side. This is not a State Plans Review. 0 A member of this office shall witness all hydrostatic, flushing, pneumatic, alarm function, and trip tests of all piping relating to automatic sprinkler equipment and underground leading to that equipment. Please notify this office twenty four (24) hours prior to testing any portion of the automatic fire protection equipment. A copy of the contractor's material and test certificate shall be forwarded to this office after completion of all testing and flushing. The installer shall properly identify this hydraulically designed auto- matic sprinkler system by a permanently attached placard indicatinq the location, and the basis of design (discharge density over designed area of discharge, including gallons per minute and residual pressure demand at base of riser).
