The purpose of the investigation is to allow foundation recom- mendations to be made for a proposed restaurant building. The site slopes slightly toward Pacific Highway. According to the published geology of the Tualatin Valley area the site and its vicinity are covered with silts deposited in a massive flood that occurred during the breakup of the northern glaciers. The site has been used for dump- ing concrete chunks and gravel from nearby highway construction opera- tions. FIELD INVESTIGATION Three boreholes were made. At intervals in two of the boreholes penetration tests were made with a 1" diameter penetrometer driven by a .31�-pou-ad weight dropped 27 inches while a count wa:: made oY the num- ber of blows needed to drive the penetrometer each 6" increment into the soll. , The soil samples recovered during this test were sealed In pack- ages for laboratory examination. Notes were kept of the resistance of the soil to augering and the depth to groundwater was measured. LABORATORY METHODS The soil samples were given hand classification tests to decide whether they were of silty or clayey nature. Their colors were compared to the standard Munsell soil color plates for clues to the soil moisture regime and soil development- pattern. FINDINGS The attached Location Sketch shows where the boreholes were made. The Borehole Logs summarize the findings. Except for the near surface, the soils in all three boreholes were almost identical. The third borehole 1. is listed below: Borehole #3 was located in the northeast corner of the proposed building. 0 to 1' Hard packed gravel and dry dirt 1 to 2' Silt, very dark gray color 2 to 3�1 Silt, mottled brown and strong blown colors 3� to 4�1 Silt, mottled grayish brown and strong brown colors 4� to 71 Silt, brown 7' Groundwater encountered 7 to 9% 1 Silt, yellowish brown 9� to 10' Clayey silt, yellowish brown, with a few coarse sand grains Borehole ended at 10' depth. The mottled soil colors indicate alternate wetting and drying of the soil. The groundwater was encountered in each borehole at about 7' depth and then it rose in the borehole to its real level of about W depth. The soil was quite firm and hard to auger. The blow counts are good, and reflect this firm condition. The concrete chunks and gravel apperently were placed on a stripped soil surface because no organics were found at all on the site. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. The recommended maximum soil pressure is 2,000 pounds per square foot fcr all loads, dead and live combined. 2. No or negligible settlement is anticipated with the above loading. 3. The recommended pavement structure for car parking is 6 inches of V% dense graded crushed rock and 2 inches of asphalt surfacing.
