you , , problem with sagging
eaves on your house was addressed, and you have requested a
clarification on two points.
The maximums span between supports for the 2x6 barge rafter l.s 1.6
" feet - 5 inches. This is based on a r_ontimious rafter, and rrhare
splices occur in the barge rafters, additional supports are
necessary.

Thio letter is a follow-up of an inspection that was conducted on
your above referenced property. The purpose of the inspection was
to determine if the gab'- eves are correctly constructed, and the
cause of the sag in these overhangs.
The apparent construction of the overhangs was trr place a plywood
board on the gable end rafter extending sixteen inches from the
gable wall, a 2x6 "barge rafter" was nailed to the outer edge of
the plywood. The support for the Large rafter and overhang is a 2x4
meiia,er connected to the first rafter in from the gabl_P 'rafter, and
cp,.cilevered 16 inches, and connected to the barge rafter.
This is a correct method for support of the eve overhang. The
apparent cause of the sag is the spacing of the cantilevered 2x4
supports. A calculation of the loads imposed on these overhangs
chowsthat the maximum span between supports for the barge rafter
is 16A-5" (for #2 & btr . grade) . The span between supports on your
house is between 17 and 18 feet.
It is apparent that there is a need to provide additional support
for these overhangs.
