The lot is located near SW 79th Avenue about halfway between Boni- ta and Durham Roads. According to the published geology of the area this general vicinity is covered with WillametLL Silt, which was deposi- ted during the breakup of the last glacial age. One borehole was made in about the center of the lot. Penetration tests to measure the firmness o' the soil were made at intervals, using a 1" diameter penetrometer driven by a 31�-pound weight dropped 27 inches. The number of drops or blows needed to drive the penetrometer 12 inches into the soil was recorded, and for uniformity the results have been con- verted to approximate equivalent Standard Penetration Test values. The soil samples recovered in this test were given hand classification tests in the laboratory to decide whether they were of silty or clayey nature. Their colors wFre compared with the standrrd Munsell soil color plates for clues to tK2 soil moisture condition and soil development pattern. The findings were: 0 to 1 ' Brown sandy silt 1 to 2' Mottled broom and strong brown colored silt. 2 to 6' Dark grayish brown fine sand trending to dark gray, greenish gray, and back to dark grayish brown by 6' 2� to 3�1 Approx equiv SPT Blow Count 3 5 to 6' Approx equiv SPT Blow Count 9 6 to 8�1 Brown silty .fine sand 71 to 81�' Approx equiv SPT Blow Count 8 Soil was wet from about 2' on downward. The hole was ended at 8�1 because of wet, caving con- 'tions. About a foot of -ill is present near the borehole and the old sur- face organic layer apparently had been stripped off. However, conditions are not uniform across the lot- and with the low blow count near the sur- face and the high groundwater level some extra effort will be necessary i 2. to provide a suitable support for a house. Assuming r:iat the work could be done during the warm, dry summer weather rhe house limits could be stripped and compacted using a vi- brating steel drum compacter. This procedure wuuli draw the water to the surface and temporarily soften the surface soil L ,, , in my opinion, after drying and resting for a few days gyne soil would be firmed enough for house support. If desired, the ground could be raised with a fill of compacted local native soil but all the present fill and any surfa,-e organics wou�d have to be dripped before starting. The work would have to be done under the inspection of a soils engineer or a testing laboratory. The fill should be compacted to at least 95% of the laboratory ASTM D698 density. If the stripped soil is unstable under thec.ompacter, filter fabric could be laid down and covered with soil to make a starting layer. Another alternative is to remove about 3 feet of the loose soil in a trench in the footing area and to refill the trench with compacted 3/4" minus crushed gravel for footing support. The work would have to be in- spected as Pbove. The high groundwater would make bad working conditions if attempts were made to merely excavate and place the footings deeper in the soil. A foundation drain or cutoff would be needed to lower the groundwa- ter. A trench draining to dayltg�t would be ,lug on three side, of the house location, and filter fabric would be draped in to wrap and enclose a perforated pipe and drain rock.
