Grecnburg Road Tigard, Oregon 97223 Dear Owner: On January 13, 1981 Deputy Fire Marshal Larry Loar anal I inspected your premise for compliance with State Building and Fire Codes, The reason for the following requirements has to do with a change Of Occupancy of this building. Originally the building was an R-3 (Residential ) occupancy, which has past been converted to a B-? (Business) occupancy. At this time the building is being used for retailing children's clothing. State Building Code requires that when a building designed for one type occupancy is changed to another type, it must be brought up to Code minimums for a new building of that occupancy. However, in most cases, this would create a Financial burdenon the building owner. so in the inerest of public safety, the following require-, meents must be met to continue the present occupancy: '1 . Install early warning devices (smoke detector) on all three levels, interlinked so all will sound alarm if one is activated. 2. Entire basement area to be separated from floors above by material approved for 1-hour construction as per Sec. 1703 of the Oregon Structural Specialty and Fire Life Safety Cone, 1979 edition. The application of 5/8" Type "X" Sheetrock on the basement ceiling plus all supporting members (beams and posts) will suffice Code. In addst.ion, the walls and ceilinq of the stairwell leading to basement will also by ptyitected as above and the door between the first floor and the stairwell will be changed to a solid core wood or metal door a minimum 1-3/4" thick and self-closing. 3. The basement area will be restricted to employees only. -2- 4. No heat, flame or spark producing appliances in basement, without permission of Fire Marshal . The Building Code requires any usable space below the first story to have a minimum of two exits. However, it is felt that with the 1-hour separation in the stairway, the fact that there is an exterior door at the top of the stairs and limiting the occupancy of the basement to employees only would not pose a great hazard.
