Report (14) February 25, 2015 f Scott Foster iLkM 10590 SW Cook Lane Tigard, OR 97223 2`_ RE: Firewall Protection Dear Dan Nelson, I am writing you this letter in the hopes of obtaining a special provision for the firewall requirements in the ADU that my wife and I are attempting to build for her aging parents. It is my understanding that we must comply with one of the listed and approved firewall systems that can found in the likes of the Gypsum Fire Resistant Design Manual or the UL Fire Resistant Database. In the end we must provide a one hour fire restraint in order to pass. Unfortunately, due to the design and unique nature of this project, I cannot find an exact match that would suite our needs. The most basic fire wall that I could find, Gypsum Manual WP 3646, requires 5/8" board on either side of a standard 2x4 framing member. I would choose this option and move forward however, there are two Issues that arise that cause concern. One, we'd have to completely tear out the walls in both bedrooms that are currently in use by my family. We have two young children and ourselves that would have nowhere to sleep while the work was being done. The second concern is the attic space above. There would be no way to get up there and sheetrock the backside of that wall. What I'm hoping Is that you'll accept a compromise that in the end should be at least as secure as the WP 3646 and on the lower level where the existing bedrooms are will exceed this standard. I have created this drawing to show what we'd like to do. Please keep in mind though that we still wouldn't be able to sheetrock the existing attic space as there would be no way to get sheetrock up there to do the job. custom Mosel Autedfon One.(1)Hour Fire Gypsum Pane/Produce,Wood Stud. Sincerely ' Scott Foster Cc Stephanie Tottingham, Adam Rolin Dan Nelson From: Scott Foster <scott.foster@consolidatedsupply.com> Sent: Wednesday, February 25, 2015 2:43 PM To: Dan Nelson Cc: stephanietottingham@gmail.com;Adam Rolin Subject: Letter for Firewall Exception Attachments: Signed Letter for Firewall.pdf; Custom Firewall.jpg Hello Dan, Please find attached a signed letter requesting the approval of an alternate option on the firewall protection in our ADU. It is my sincere hope that you'll be able to accept this as alternative and issue the required permits. I would really like to not have to re-Sheetrock my personal bedroom and that of my two young children as we'd have no where to sleep during the process. As I'm sure you can imagine, this would put a tremendous amount of stress on all of our lives, and I'd really like to avoid it if at all possible. I think you'll find that what I've come up with (with the help of my architect and professional Sheetrock contractor) is at least as secure as the basic Gypsum Manual WP 3646 option. Please let me know as soon as you can if this option will be acceptable. I would really like to get started on this project soon. Thank you very much for all of your help and assistance getting through this very thorough permit process.
