Report (10) Y AUTOMATIC SPRINKLERS Iii LOBE GL SERIES Well 4est, FIRE SPRINKLER DRY Tiiii `k `' CORPORATION PENDENT RECESSED PENDENT co DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION C C C The Globe GL Series Dry Type Pendent Sprinkler is o 0 0 designed for use in special applications such as freezing environ- rn rn cn ments and conditions where sediment or foreign materials might o 0 0 accumulate in ordinary drop nipples. The Globe GL Series Dry Type Pendent Sprinkler utilizes a N N o frangible glass ampule sprinkler. At the ampule's rated temperature, 0 0 0 the sprinkler opens releasing the bulb seat, causing the inner tube OD 00 oo assembly to move, allowing spring assembly to pivot alongside the s O N w inner tube. At this time, water flows through the sprinkler and is `' w: c. ,..0 N distributed by the deflector, in an approved discharge pattern. , The heart of Globe's GL Series sprinkler proven actuating ;,.. ; "a. assembly is a hermetically sealed frangible glass ampule that contains " } :;. a precisely measured amount of fluid. When heat is absorbed, the liquid within the bulb expands increasing the internal pressure. At CO CO Co the prescribed temperature the internal pressure within the ampule xi = 7, exceeds the strength of the glass causing the glass to shatter. This z z 2 results in water discharge which is distributed in an approved SURFACE SLEEVE pattern. Plaza West, Suite 230 9600 SW Oak Portland, OR 97223 RE: Flow Test of Water Distribution System SW Canterbury Ln. and SW 106th Project No. 2004-071 Dear Pete: Flow tests of the water distribution system serving the subject project were conducted on Wednesday, November 24 between 1.0:00 AM and 10:30 AM. Two tests were conducted. The first flow a hydrant located on SW Canterbury at 109th. The second flowed a hydrant located east of the existing building offices. Elevation of hydrant at SW Canterbury and SW 109th is approximately 32' lower than the hydrant at SW Canterbury and SW 106`''. Elevation of the hydrant east of the project office is at the same approximate elevation of the hydrant at SW Canterbury and SW 106`''. Tests were conducted in accordance with National Fire Protection Association Standard No. 291. The City of Tigard was present and manually started two 1,000 g.p.m. pumps. The pumps supply water to a local high-pressure water distribution zone. Water source is two water tanks located at SW Canterbury Ln. and SW 106th. Test results are: TEST NO.1. Location of pressure hydrant = SW Canterbury& SW 106th Location of flow hydrant = SW Canterbury & SW 109" Static Pressure= 64 psig Nov 03 05110: 27a City of Tigard PW 5036848840 p, 3 Nov 30 04 O4: llp Dee Lockwood [503) 445-6388 p. 2 I , • Residual Pressure= 36 psig Static pressure at flow hydrant = 78 psig Residual pressure at flow hydrant= 38 psig Pitot pressure= 29 psig— I ea. 4'/z" Hose Monster Observed flow= 1,783 g.p.m. Available fire Flow at pressure hydrant = 2,369 g.p.m. at 20 psig TEST 1O.2 Location of pressure hydrant = SW Canterbury& SW 106th Location of flow hydrant = East of project office Building Static Pressure= 64 psig Residual Pressure— 56 psig Static pressure at flow hydrant = 66 psig Residual pressure at flow hydrant = 47 psig Pitot pressure= 28 psig— 1 ea. 21A"Hose Monster Observed flow= 893 g.p.m. Available fire flow= 2,242 g.p.m. at 20 psig Available fire flow at the pressure hydrant should be the same for both tests. Test No. 1 is probably the most accurate as more water was discharged. Available fire flows observed at the flow hydrants were 2179 g.p.m. at SW Canterbury and SW 1091h and 1492 g.p.m. at hydrant east of project office. The observation of static and residual pressures at the flow hydrant give available flows at the hydrant discharge ports. Test results at the flow hydrant should not be used for fire sprinkler system design. Available fire flow with completion of an 8"water main that essentially loops the two flow hydrants will increase the available fire flows at the respective project hydrants. However, the City of Tigard will probably want to prevent reducing static pressures anywhere within the zone below 20 psig. The above flow tests suggest the system (zone)available fire flow is limited to about 2,369 5.p.rn. Thank you for the opportunity to work with you on this project. Please call if you have questions. (6)A note in the new fire wall penetration notes that all walls and floor/ceilings that separate units are 1 hour rated. (11)A civil water plan has been submitted for reference. Piping sizes are shown in hydraulic calc's and on a new note located below the riser detail. (14)The sprinkler legend now shows the number of heads per floor. (17)A new note on the plans describes that all CPVC piping is installed concealed with at least 5/8" sheetrock as protection (joist bays and attics). (21)Hanger details are shown on plan. There is a new hanger note located next to the hanger details. (23)See note (11) above. 3. All incorrect references to the buildings heights and tatings have been corrected. The plans now note that Buildings 8,9,13-15 & 29-32 are 2-story w/ basement. Plans also note that this does not affect the fire sprinkler system design or installation. The plans also now have a note next to the title block stating that these plans are for fire sprinkler system installation only. Please let me know if any more information or clarification is needed.
