(503)658-0200 (503)658-0204 Fax ENGINEERING FIELD DIRECTIVE To: Sage Built Homes Project: Murdock Lot 1 From: Mark Butler Subject: Drilled Beams, Garage Door Header Date: May 18, 2016 BCI Job No: 156-0911-10 This Engineering Field Directive is issued to Sage Built Homes for the single family residence identified as the Alder plan under construction on Parcel 1 in the Murdock partition on SW Murdock Street in unincorporated Washington County, Oregon holes drilled in glulam beams and the header size over the garage door. A series of holes were drilled in glulam beams at the following locations: 1. 51/2 x 12" glulam in the great room near the fireplace: The 1" 4) hole is near the quarter point of the beam span at approximately mid-depth of the beam. The beam is acceptable with the hole drilled in it. 2. 51/2 x 21" glulam in the garage: Two 1" 4) holes, one above the other are, and another 1" 4) hole several feet away are drilled in the beam. While less than ideal to drill the holes one above the other, the holes are located away from the support and the point of maximum bending moment. The design of the beam was controlled by deflection rather than bending capacity. The drilling of the holes will have no significant impact on the beam deflection. The beam is acceptable with the holes drill in it. The plans call for the header over the 8' garage door to be a 4x12 DF #2. A 4x10 was installed instead. The 4x10 DF#2 was analyzed and found to have sufficient capacity. Please do not hesitate to call if you have any questions or need additional clarification.
