Subject: Solids Building HVAC Noise Issue 1EXPIRATION DATE:iiMh 117 CWS Solids Building Odor Control Project: 6755 K/J 1376013.70 Dear Randy and Dan: The majority of the existing noise associated with the Solids Building HVAC systems is the sound of air exhausting out of the Odor Scrubber stack. The intensity of the noise is related to the air velocity exiting the stack. Decreasing the odor scrubber flow rate from 35,000 cubic feet per minute (cfm)to 20,500 cfm will drop the noise generated from the stack from approximately 60 decibels (dB)to 48 dB, measured near the stack. This is a perceived noise reduction of approximately one-half the human ear. The 14,500 cfm decrease in air flow to the Odor Scrubbers will now be exhausted out of new exhaust fans located on the roof. According to our calculations, the combination of new noise sources and noise from the exhaust stack will result in a slight net decrease in noise (1-5 dB) when compared to existing conditions. Thanks, John From: Randy Naef[mailto:NaefR@CleanWaterServices.org] Sent: Monday, March 14, 2016 8:19 AM To:John Floyd; #CD PoD Cc: Dan Garbely Subject: CWS Duham Solids Building Project: (BUP2016-00073) John, Monica, et al. Attached is a letter from the designer regarding the noise impact of this project.Although it states the situation from a pure engineering standpoint I'd like to elaborate because it, to me, doesn't tell the story very well. A significant secondary benefit of this project is the large reduction of noise from the scrubber. This scrubber noise is by far the most perceptible from this facility to the surrounding area and it's reduction was a priority of this project. The new exhaust fans that the noise report discusses are located on the roof at interior locations and will not impact the surrounding area in the manner the scrubber does.So although the stated calculated net noise reduction is small, the perceptible noise reduction will be significant. I'd be happy to demonstrate this with a site visit to whoever might be interested. Please give me a call with any questions and/or if I can demonstrate this point.
