Chapter 13 was used to determine the appropriate seismic design force for the fan equipment support connection. The iFly Portland structure and all components have been designed for Seismic Design Category D. The seismic design force was calculated using the design spectral response acceleration at short periods (Sds =0.707g) for the location of iFly Portland as provided in the Walter P. Moore Design Calculations. The importance factor was taken as one based on ASCE7-05 13.1.3 information for a building with non-critical equipment and low occupancy category Op= 1.0). The component amplification factor and the component response modification factor were determined from ASCE7-05 Table 13.6-1 (ap=2.5 and Rp=2.5). The average roof height of the structure was taken as the elevation of the service deck (h=67'-0") and the height in the structure at the point of attachment of the component was taken as the base of the fan supports (z=53'-9 1/2"). The component operating weight was taken from manufacturer specifications (Wp=16.4 kips). Using the seismic design force, the fan support connection was assessed in both directions. It was assumed that the gravity loads on the component were zero since the fan does not support additional load besides self weight. Based on these calculations the fan support connection can be made with (4) 7/8" diameter A325 bolts in a 1" thick plate supported by the W-shape. The connection can be seen in details 4/SR5104 provided on the next page.
