Tte proposed structure will be approximately 68 feet wide as compared to the existing width of 26 feet. Most of the additional width wi11 be on the upstream side of th sfiructure. • HYDROLOCY Fanno Creek is a north-south tributary of the 7ualatin River and drai.ns an area of approxima.tely 11.8 square miles above the proposed bridge site. Most of the basin is urban in nature. Tfie recurrence interval vs. pa. discharge relatonsIiip listed below was obtained from the 4 Corps n£ Engineers and are tfie values beatng used for the current flood insurance study of Fanno Creek.. It is estimated that during the 50-year flod the ex3.sting structure creaes approximately 2.2 feet of backwater resulting in a highwater elevation of 164.3 feet (MSL) along the upstream embankments. During this flood, it is estimated that 2,150 cfs would be coztveyed as pressure flow thxough the bri.dge opening with the remaining 280 c£s con- veyed as roadaay overflow. Apri1 30, 1980 • Page two • i HYDRAULIC DESIGN , The SO-year flood of 2,430 cfs was chosen as the design flood with an ` estimated natural higwater elevation of 162.1 feet (MSL). The estimated natural highwater elevat3.an during the I00-year fl,00d of 2,68D cfs is r 1f 2.3 feet (MSL). To maintain the status quo, it was determined that the new structure should provide a 305 square £oot waterway opening below the bottom of the beams. A slightly larger waterway area than the existing is sug- . gested since the roadway overflow area is being eliminated with the raising of the grade. The suggested waterway are.a would be satisied with either a vertical abutment structure approximately 50 feet long or a 1-1/2;1 spillthough abutmeni structure approximately 68 feet long. During the 50-year design flood, the proposed stxucture wi11 create , approximately 1.7 feet of backwater, resulting in a highwater elevation of Z53.8 feet (MSL) along the upstream embankments. During the 100-year ` • flood the proposed structure will create approximatel 2.1 feet of back- '. water resulting in highwater elevation of 164.4 feet along tha upstream. ' embankments. During both the 50-year and 100-year floods, the flood- waters will be canveyed as pressure flow through the br3dge opening. RIPRAP w_ If vertical abutments are used, i is suggested that th.ey be protected E with class 50 loose riprap placed in a rrench arounci the toe of the abutment. Spillth.rouh abutments with 1--1/2:1 slopes should be pr.o- ` tected with an 18--inch blanket of class 100 Ioose riprap. Protection ` for the spillthrough abutments should h.ave a toe trench.
