G O Dear Jason, IS }I Enclosed under cover of this letter are the following document sets; `EXPIRES MIS.* • Shop Drawing Sheet 1 • Hydraulic Calculation • Seismic Brace Calculations • Manufacturers Data Submittals I find that this design submittal, prepared by JR Merit,is in general conformance with the intended project design. The submittal has been reviewed only for the limited purpose of checking for general conformance with the design concept as expressed in the Contract Documents, subject to the requirements of the Contract Documents. I have reviewed the above referenced documents. I find that the documents appear to be compliant with codes and standards including in part NFPA 13,ASCE 07,Oregon Fire Code,Oregon Structural Specialty Code,ACI,IBC and IMC as well as specific requirements of the City of Tigard with the following notations. • Refer to Engineers Report attached for storage analysis and determination of sprinkler density, • The project involves increasing the sprinkler density in a zone where rack storage of Class I— IV commodities up to 18'in height is planned. • Sprinkler density will be increased to 0.38 gpm/2400 sf in accordance with NFPA 13 Chapter 16. I have placed my Oregon PE seal on this letter indicating engineering review approval of documents referenced above, subject to the conditions stated herein and approval from the City of Tigard,OR. Please contact me at your convenience if you need any further assistance during the approval and permit process. We conclude that sprinkler density will need to be increased in a zone area where racks are proposed for storage up to 18'. The matter we investigated is the fire protection requirements and specifically the requirement for sprinklers in the storage area where racking will be installed,we did not evaluate other Fire& Life Safety features of your building. In May I conducted a field survey of the commodity storage. I conclude the following; • The commodities proposed for rack storage include NFL football equipment, displays and metal framing, • The commodities will be stored at floor level on 6'shelves and on racks up to 18'in height cardboard cartons and wooden crates. Metals will be stored without packaging on the racks, • Based on observation and review of materials specifications which you provided I conclude that these are primarily Class I—IV commodities with some Group A plastics, • The hard plastics which contain flame retardant, such as football helmets are primarily ABS and mannequins amino plastics. MSDS would suggest these are Class IV commodities. This report addresses the sprinkler requirements in the storage area of the building;see attached plan view. The total storage area is 12,000 sq ft. The first step in determining if sprinkler coverage is required is the occupancy classification. Paragraph 311.2 of the OSSC defines storage of the commodities contemplated for this site to be Group S-1. WER-I PHONE (503)333-3470 13467 SW Summerwood Dr E-MAIL WALT.L COOK @GMAILCOM Tigard,OR 97223 Page 2 August 2,2014 • • Al Smith Earnest Images Paragraph 903.2.9 of the OSSC requires automatic sprinklers if the fire area exceeds 12,000 sf, which is the case for this warehouse. The storage area is 12,000 sf. Fire sprinklers were installed in 1999;the density is OH II or 0.21 gpm/1,536 sf. The attached warehouse layout shows storage in the following manner; • Storage at floor level of commodities staged for shipment in the front half of the warehouse, existing sprinkler coverage is adequate, • Storage of Class I—IV commodities on racks up to 18'in height in the rear half area of the main warehouse,a higher density zone with 15'buffer beyond the racks, will be installed where sprinkler density will be increased to 0.38 gpm/2400 sf in accordance with NFPA 13 Chapter 16,see attached sprinkler plan. • Storage of football equipment on shelves 6'in height and on a section of wall racks up to 12'in height in the back corner area, storage will be in accordance with Table 13.2.1, existing sprinkler coverage is adequate. Chapter 16 of NFPA 13 specifies the required sprinkler density for rack storage of these commodities. First for storage up to 12'in height 16.2.1.2.1 refers to Chapter 13 for sprinkler density and storage conditions. Based on Table 13.2.1 any of the commodities in this warehouse including some Group A plastics can be stored on racks or shelves in accordance with the conditions specified in the table. For storage above 12'for any of the commodities including the metals will require additional sprinkler density. A higher sprinkler density zone for storage of the composite commodities containing some plastic on racks up to 18'in height will be established as shown on the attached drawing prepared by Jr Merritt. This letter of determination should accompany your racking permit as well as the submittal for sprinkler upgrades. This assures lasting performance and serviceability.Available in both "full flow" and "restricted orifice"design. Flow can be viewed through two high impact Lexan (polycarbonate)windows on either side of the sight glass. All models i feature male by female thread patterns for easy"in line" installation. The"full flow" design is suitable for system flow verification. The restricted orifice types can be used to simulate system sprinkler head flow which can be viewed through either window. Not designed to be used under pressure. wimminimmimmi Installation Specifications Installation can be made using readily available field tools and materials.Apply a suitable pipe thread sealant to the either the male or female threads. The brass ' Cast Sight Glass sight glass with the restricted orifice must be installed so the direction of flow is from the female thread to the male thread. This al- lows the restricted stream to Material: be viewed through the Lexan (polycarbonate)windows. The unrestricted models Body:Brass*Alloy Windows: Polycarbonate . may be installed in either direction, however, they should be installed consistent with industry standards. The sight glass threads have been machined according Finish: to standard iron pipe thread specifications. Installation is similar to other Rough Brass* threaded fittings.Caution:Do not over tighten.Over tightening will cause the Sizes: sight glass fitting to crack. 1"M x F Full flow 'h"orifice(F x F) "/a"orifice 11/a"MxF Approximate Sight Glass Dimensions 11/2"F x F take-out width depth 2"F x F All Full flow Pipe Size Restricting Orifice A B C 08-529-00 1" n/a 31/2" 21" 21/2" *Contains lead. Not for use in 08-530-00 1" 1/2" 3'/a" 2'/8" 2'/a" water systems intended for human consumption. 08-531-00 11/4" n/a 4" 21/2" 21/2" 08-532-00 1" 1 7/32" 4" 21/2" 21/2" 08-533-00 11/2" n/a 3Ya" 21/4" 3'4" 08-535-00 2" n/a 33's" 2'/s" 2'/s" 3198 LIONSHEAD AVE TEL+1 760 599 1168 +1 800 344-1822 FAX+1 800 344-3775 0 2012 Fire Protection Products,Inc.
