Tigard Public Library Board — Minutes
MEETING DATE/TIME: Wednesday,November 13,2013 7 p.m.

1. CALL TO ORDER:
At 7:00 p.m. Chair Scott Hancock called to order the November 13,2013 Tigard Library Board.
2. ROLL CALL
Present at the meeting were: Laura Cadiz, Scott Hancock, Katie Harris,John Storhm and Jan Thenell;
Library Director Margaret Barnes and Executive Assistant Alison Grimes. Linda Monahan and Dan Snyder
were excused.
3. APPROVE MINUTES
The Board reviewed and, after amending the section of minutes in Library Trends to reflect the discussion
of the Oregon Library Passport program, approved the October 9,2013 minutes as presented.

4. AGENDA ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS
None.
5. CALL TO THE PUBLIC
David Abbey, Circulation Supervisor,was the staff guest for November. A long-time resident with a
background in business,Abbey was hired as Circulation Supervisor in May. Married,with two children,
Abbey previously worked at Tualatin Public Library and was a member of their Library Advisory Board. As
scheduling is one of his main duties,Abbey color-coded the scheduling process to make it easier to
determine staffing needs. He tracks data from the self-check machines and credit card usage and door
count statistics and is occasionally called upon to deal with more challenging issues or conversations with
patrons and staff.
6. LIBRARY POLICIES REVIEW
o Food and Beverage Policy: The Board unanimously approved the policy as presented.

o Confidentiality of Library Records Policy: This policy was tabled for further discussion in December.
7. LIBRARY OPERATIONS
The monthly statistics were distributed and reviewed. Barnes noted that although less programs are being
offered,more people are attending than in the previous two years. The 50`t'Birthday celebration was very
well attended;we even received a big birthday card from Beaverton Public Library. Story Times remain
active and the upcoming Kristallnacht program is expected to be well-attended. A program about William
Stafford, Oregon's Poet Laureate,is planned for January and is the kick-off for Oregon Reads! Upcoming
events include the annual Volunteer Recognition,which will be held in the spring, and a celebration
commemorating the 10t1 anniversary of the building is planned for August. Staff job shadowing will
continue through December;Barnes will have information about this and the Library's Strategic Plan in
January. Carpeting for the second floor has been ordered and will be installed in phases after arrival.
8. ANNUAL LIBRARY SURVEY
Scheduled for the first two weeks in February(Feb. 2— 15),managers are currently developing the questions for
the survey. Barnes asked the Board to consider volunteering to work at the survey table.
9. OTHER BUSINESS
o LIBRARY TRENDS
Larger libraries are allocating"maker" space. Libraries seem to be the place where people go to try
something new.
A decline in newspapers was noted.
Also noted was that the bond measure for the new library in Cornelius did not pass.
10. ADJOURN
There being no further business,Hancock adjourned the meeting at 8:01 p.m.

second floor Conference Room of the Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.,Tigard.
