10/09/2013 - Minutes City of Tigard Tigard Public Library Board — Minutes MEETING DATE/TIME: Wednesday, October 9,2013 7 p.m. MEETING LOCATION: 13500 SW Hall Blvd.,Local History Room, Second Floor 1. CALL TO ORDER: At 7:00 p.m. Chair Scott Hancock called to order the October 9,2013 Tigard Library Board. 2. ROLL CALL Present at the meeting were: Laura Cadiz, Scott Hancock, Katie Harris,Linda Monahan,Dan Snyder and John Storhm;Library Director Margaret Barnes and Executive Assistant Alison Grimes. Jan Thenell was excused. 3. APPROVE MINUTES The Board reviewed and, there being no additions or corrections, approved the September 11, 2013 minutes as presented. Motion—Harris Second—Cadiz Cadiz—Aye Hancock—Aye Harris—Aye Monahan-Aye Snyder—Aye Storhm—Aye Thenell - Excused 4. AGENDA ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS None. 5. CALL TO THE PUBLIC Laurie Snyder,Library Assistant in Circulation was the staff guest for October. In 2002, Snyder switched from utilizing her Masters in social work to working in libraries, driving a bookmobile in Idaho. She joined the Tigard Library staff in 2012 and handles a variety of tasks in Circulation. Snyder especially likes dealing with the patrons and seeing what books they're checking out,but also does some volunteer orientation and training and working on missing or damaged parts. 6. ALA AND LIBRARY POLICIES REVIEW After affirming that neither the ALA (American Library Association's)Library Bill of Rights nor the Freedom to Read have been updated or amended since originally amended or revised,Hancock first asked for a motion to reaffirm the Library Bill ofRights. There being no additions or corrections,it was reapproved as presented. Motion—Snyder Second—Cadiz Cadiz—Aye Hancock—Aye Harris —Aye Monahan-Aye Snyder—Aye Storhm—Aye Thenell—Excused Staff will choose several policies for review for November's meeting. 7. LIBRARY OPERATIONS The monthly statistics were distributed and reviewed. Barnes discussed the replacement of the second floor carpeting,passing around a sample of the carpet file that will be installed. These carpet tiles will replace the existing carpeting on the second floor and matching broadloom will be installed on the stairs. Enough carpet tiles matching the first floor carpeting were found and will replace the section of carpet that was installed on the first floor in front of the elevator. Installation is slated to begin this winter. With school back in session, the Library is busy;we're also gearing up for the annual William Stafford program and the 50`'Anniversary celebration of the library. 8. LIBRARY'S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION Scheduled for Sunday,November 3, from 2—4 p.m.in the Community Room,Johnny Limbo and the Lugnuts have confirmed that they will play during the celebration. Invitations will be mailed Thursday and planning is well underway for the event. The Friends have graciously agreed to fund the celebration. 9. OTHER BUSINESS o LIBRARY TRENDS An article in The New York Times about libraries being utilized as places for shelter during heat waves or blizzards because there is more to do while there was mentioned. Barnes will locate the article and forward to Board members. Also briefly discussed was the Oregon Library Passport Program. 10. ADJOURN There being no further business, Hancock adjourned the meeting at 7:25 p.m. The next meeting of the Tigard Library Board will be Wednesday, November 13,2013 at 7 p.m. in the second floor Conference Room of the Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.,Tigard.
