CALL TO ORDER: At 7:01 p.m.Vice-Chair John Storhm called to order the September 11,2013 Tigard Library Board. 2. ROLL CALL Present at the meeting were: Laura Cadiz, Scott Hancock, Katie Harris, Linda Monahan,Dan Snyder,John Storhm and Jan Thenell;Alternate Lorena Stewart;Library Director Margaret Barnes and Executive Assistant Alison Grimes. 3. APPROVE MINUTES The Board reviewed and, there being no additions or corrections, approved the July 10, 2013 minutes as presented. AGENDA ADDITIONS AND DELETIONS Add 50`'Birthday Celebration event to Item 8, Library Operations. 5. CALL TO THE PUBLIC Lisa Cochran, Circulation Library Assistant was the staff guest for September. Previously working in a library in Las Vegas, Cochran has been with the Tigard Library since 2006. Some of her job duties include missing and/or damaged parts, training new volunteers,working at the Welcome Desk and gathering data for various reports. 6. ELECTION OF OFFICERS Vice-Chair Storhm opened the floor for nominations. Monahan nominated Scott Hancock for Chair. Harris seconded. Motion—Monahan Second—Hancock Cadiz—Aye Hancock—Aye Harris —Aye Monahan-Aye Snyder—Aye Storhm—Abstain Thenell -Aye Hancock will assume the role of Chair at the October meeting. 7. ALA POLICY REVIEW Copies of the American Library Association's Freedom to Read and Library Bill of Rights documents were distributed for review. Staff was asked to check to see if there have been any updates to either document. These two,plus several Library policies will be reviewed during the October meeting. 8. LIBRARY OPERATIONS Summer Reading is over for 2013. Barnes noted that staff saw an 84%increase in adult registration;kids'and teen registration remained about the same. A variety of new programs were offered—Maker Mondays with a 3- D printer demonstration was very popular. This year's teen summer volunteers contributed over 15 FTEs toward library productivity and library staff noted how impressed they were with the teen leaders. A press release from WCCLS was distributed. The release noted that 13.1 million items were checked out in the previous year through the Cooperative. At 1.41 million items,Tigard Library was one of the top five locations based on total items checked out in FY 2012-13 and is the top net lender in the Cooperative. Barnes then handed out the statistic s for both July and August. Both Nook and Kindle e-readers remain popular with the public. To promote team building and an understanding of other job duties, staff will be job shadowing different positions within the Library from September through December. Barnes informed the Board about a 50'birthday celebration that is being planned. A library was established in Tigard in November 1963 so on November 3 the Library will host a celebration commemorating the 50`'birthday of a library. Johnny Limbo and the Logouts will be performing. This event kicks off a year-long celebration culminating in a celebration of the tenth anniversary of the current Library building. Finally,Barnes is looking at various carpet tile samples in anticipation of replacing the carpeting on the second floor. 9. OTHER BUSINESS o LIBRARY TRENDS An article regarding MineCraft where someone is recreating their library was mentioned. It was also noted that Penguin Publishing merged leaving only five major book sellers and an article about a library in Fairfax County,Virginia tossing books into a dumpster was discussed. 10. ADJOURN There being no further business, Storhm adjourned the meeting at 7:54 p.m. The next meeting of the Tigard Library Board will be Wednesday, October 9, 2013 at 7 p.m. in the second floor Conference Room of the Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.,Tigard.
