Call to the Public Sean Garvey, Adult Reference Librarian, was introduced to the Board by Barnes. Graduating from Rutgers University and a librarian for 11 years, Garvey has been with the Tigard Library for about six months. Previously employed at West Linn and Oregon City, Sean said he enjoys working here as he is able to do everything he was trained to do, from collection development to programming to interaction with patrons. The coordinator of this year's Summer Reading Program, Garvey highlighted several of the many programs planned for the event. He also has ideas for several other programs he hopes to hold outside at the Library's gazebo. The Board answered several of Garvey's questions before leaving the meeting at 7:20 p.m. Monthly Reports for March, 2008 March was another record-breaking month with 102,865 items circulated. (As a comparison, March 2007's total was around 85,000.) This coming Saturday, April 12, Tigard Library hosts the "Hearing Voices" kickoff. The Last Chinese Chef by Nicole Mones is the chosen book for "Tigard Reads" with a variety of Chinese-themed activities occurring throughout the month of May. As next year marks Oregon's 150th anniversary, the book Broken Twig has already been chosen for the state-wide read. WCCLS Update Timing software presentations have been completed. Comprise, the current vendor, and Envisionware, are the two competing vendors. Feelings are mixed about staying with the current vendor or trying someone new. More meetings are scheduled before a decision will be made. Recently WCCLS took a web-based survey but completed it after receiving the first 100 responses. Many felt it was not very scientific and a larger sampling should be taken. The bestseller collection project is moving forward; another meeting is scheduled for next week. Barnes felt a pilot project, focusing on books, would be a good beginning — start small to learn what works and what doesn't. City Budget Meetings The Library's 2009 budget will be presented Monday, April 28 at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Room. It will be pretty straightforward, Barnes noted; the budget request includes one additional FTE and an increase in collection development, the remaining budget items are basically the same. Board members may attend if they wish, but it is not necessary. If budget meetings progress well, Barnes should have an update for the Board by the May meeting. Summer Readinq Programs Both the Adult and Children's Summer Reading Program will begin around the same time and run from June through August. As the theme for this 13th annual program is "Transform Yourself @ Your Library", the kid's theme will be bug-based. The Friends of the Tigard Library are helping to fund many of the programs planned for this event. Other Business • Library Trends — None • CCI —Although not in attendance, Levear sent an email letting the Board know she expects to attend the May CCI meeting. Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 8:06 p.m. The next Library Board meeting is scheduled for Thursday, May 8, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Conference Room at the Tigard Public Library, 13500 SW Hall Blvd.
