Report /£33 a t) t) • • ?.t2. . MARY GIERSCH CONSULTING ARBORIST OFFICE COPY ASSIGNMENT To update my certified arborist tree inventory report, dated 10/1/2011,for 10330 SW Scholl's Ferry Road,Tigard,Oregon, based on updated development plans. LIMITS TO ASSIGNMENT My observations were limited to what was visible to me from the ground and the condition of the trees on the date and time of my inspections. The northeastern section of the property includes areas where the root crowns of many trees are partially or wholly covered with thickets of blackberry and English ivy. Observations for both reports were limited to what was reasonably accessible and visible to me through these thickets. FIELD OBSERVATIONS & DISCUSSION I conducted an additional basic Visual Tree Inspection on Tuesday,August 7,2012. A revised Tree Inventory Table is included as an attachment to this report. Health condition ratings for each tree have been added to the table. It has also been updated to reflect tree retention changes based on revised development plans and project arborist retention recommendations. Trees 488 (35"Pine)and 447(13"Oak)are now classified as hazards due to the significant decay within their main stems or trunk. I was able to machete my way in to more accurately measure Tree 431 and updated its DBH (Diameter-at-Breast-Height)measurement from 11 to 13 inches. RECOMMENDATIONS Hazard trees 488&Tree 447 should not be retained and should be removed prior to construction. Tree 439(13"Douglas-fir)is a young tree in good condition and should be retained with protection if possible. Tree retention recommendations are subject to change based upon additional information(such as onsite staking of new building foundations)becoming available. Retained trees shall be protected during construction activities. A Tree Protection Plan is currently being developed and will be submitted separately. It is my understanding that the property is being developed to include new school buildings, playground, and parking areas. The Tree Survey will include an onsite visit to determine tree species, size and location. I will summarize my observations in a written report which shall include a data table and an arborist site map. OBSERVATIONS AND DISCUSSION I conducted my initial onsite assessment on Monday,September 26rd,2011. The survey was completed over several days and required cutting my way through masses of thick blackberry and holly in some areas. My observations were limited to what was visible to me from ground and the conditions on the date of my inspection. The trees included in the survey are based on the property lines provided by Mr. Fouad Elgharabli. As a starting point I used a 9 year old tree survey provided by Mr. Elgharabli. I verified the existence and location of trees on the map and re-measured them to determine current Diameter-at-Breast-Height(DBH). I identified, measured and located all other trees on the site with DBH measurements of 6 inches or greater. Trees were assigned unique identification numbers and aluminum identification tags were affixed to their trunks. Trees were then added manually to a scanned copy of the original map as closely as possible to their location. The scanned and revised site map includes ID numbers,DBH measurements, and`names'of the trees. Determinations as to which trees would be retained and which would be removed for construction were made using a 9/19/2011 developmental plan for the site. Retained trees on the site map are coded in green, and trees being removed for construction are coded in purple. Trees coded in orange are those that are either hazards or common fruit trees, both of which are exempt from Tigard's tree development regulations. SUMMARY The tree survey includes 81 trees, 5 of which are exempt. The total number of non-exempt trees with a DBH of 12 inches or greater is 46. Thirty-five(35)of these trees are being retained which represents 76 percent. A detailed summary of the data is included in the attached tree survey data table. RECEIVED AUG 1 6 2012 CITY OF TIGARD PLANNING/ENGINEERING . o Mary Giersch, Consulting Arborist 503-523-6411 ISA Certified Arborist PN-6732A Mary @im4trees.com In my professional opinion, further testing on the 63"DBH oak tree at the center of your building project is advisable. It is a mature tree of substantial value located in a high value, constant use area. Non-invasive sonic tomography testing would determine if there is decay within the tree and to what extent. This testing is available locally through a company called New Day Arborists. The City of Tigard requires that you submit a Tree Protection Plan to protect the retained trees during construction. Periodic construction monitoring and reporting by a project arborist may also be required. I would welcome the opportunity to serve as the project arborist for this development and look forward to discussing this with you in the future.
