As you know, we visited the project site and met with you yesterday in an effort to understand the as built
conditions regarding the roof decking and the structural concerns that the building authority may have.
We observed and understand the roof decking to be 2 x 6 tongue and groove decking spanning about 8
feet to wood purlins that are supported by glulam girders about 20' feet apart that span to the exterior
walls. The existing roof decking is installed in a controlled random layup where some of the end joints do
not splice over the supporting purlins, which is common for the construction of the day it was built.
It appears that some of the tongue and grooves in the roof boards have become dis- lodged due to
apparent wood shrinkage, twisting, deterioration of the tongue /groove, or perhaps a combination of all the
above. This condition becomes a structural issue when shorter deck boards are used in the controlled
random layout resulting in individual boards not having the ability to span to the supports. We will limit
our review and comments to the re- support of the decking for gravity loads only.
In these conditions, the contractor has elected to remove the loose pieces of decking and replace them
with kiln dried 2 x 6 select deck boards that span from purlin to purlin. The contractor can adjust the
existing boards slightly to allow the new deck boards to "snap" in and engage the tongue and groove on
both sides of the piece. In addition, 3" long x #8 wood screws have been installed diagonally to
effectively "toe nail" across the tongue and groove joint to the adjacent board. Please see the attached
sketch A/SK -1 for a representation of the improvements being implemented.
We take no exception to this structural renovation. Please note that all new deck boards are to be
fastened to the supporting purlins with (2)48 x 3" long screws along with the diagonal screws noted
above. Also, the contractor is to ensure that the tongue and groove is engaged at least half way along
each long side into the adjacent board. Also, where the existing deck board tongue has slipped out of the
groove of the adjacent board, the diagonal screws are to be used to move the pieces back together so
that the tongue and groove are back in alignment and seated properly.
