Correspondence 4 I May 3, 2005 CITE- OF . TIGARD OREGON_ . Wyatt Fire Protection, INC Richard Romer 9095 SW Burnham Tigard, OR 97223 • RE: FIRE SPRINKLER SYSTEM MODIFICATION - REVIEW Project Information . Building Permit: BUP2005 -00178 Construction Type: 3B Tenant Name: Ben Bridge Occupancy Type: M Address: 9516 SW Washington Sq Occupant Load: 86 Area: 2969 sq ft Stories: 1 Hazard: Ordinary Group Commodity: IV The plan review was performed under the State of Oregon Structural Specialty Code (OSSC) 2004 edition, Oregon Fire Code 2004 edition; and NFPA 13. The submitted plans are approved subject to the following. HYDROSTATIC TESTING Hydrostatic testing of the system shall occur at sprinkler final. The contractor's material and test certificate required by NFPA 13, 16.1 shall be completed and signed by both the installer and building owner. Failure TESTING: - Section 16.2.1 1. Unless permitted by 16.2.1.2 through 16.2.1.6, all piping and attached appurtenances subjected to system working pressure shall be hydrostatically tested at 200 psi (13.8 bar) and shall maintain that pressure without loss for 2 hours. Loss shall be determined by a drop in gauge pressure or visual leakage. The test pressure shall be read from a gauge located at the low elevation point of the system or portion being tested. 16.2.1.2: Portions of systems normally subjected to system working pressures in excess of 150 psi (10.4 bar) shall be tested as described in 10 -2.2.1 at a pressure of 50 psi (3.5 bar) in excess of system working pressure. 16.2.1.3: Where cold weather will not permit testing with water, an interim air test shall be permitted to be conducted as described in 16.2.3. 16.2.1.4: Modifications affecting 20 or fewer sprinklers shall not require testing in excess of system working pressure. 16.2.1.5: Where addition or modification is made to an existing system affecting more than 20 sprinklers, the new portion shall be isolated and tested at not less than 200 psi (13.8 bar) for 2 hours. 16.2.1.6: Modifications that cannot be isolated, such as relocated drops, shall not require testing in excess of system working pressure. 13125 SW Hall Blvd., Tigard, OR 97223 (503) 639 -4171 TDD (503) 684 -2772 • WATERFLOWALARMS: - Section 6.9.1 7. Water flow alarm apparatus shall be listed for the service and so constructed and installed that any flow of water from :a sprinkler system equal to or greater than that from a single automatic sprinkler of the smallest orifice size installed on the system will result in an audible alarm on the premises within 5 minutes after such flow begins and until such flow stops. CONCEALED SPACES: - Section 8.14.1 8. All concealed spaces enclosed wholly or partly by exposed combustible construction shall be protected by sprinklers. HANGERS: . . . 9. The maximum distance between hangers shall not exceed that specified in Table 9 -2.2. Exception: The maximum distance between hangers for listed nonmetallic pipe shall be modified as specified in the individual product listings. ( PIPING CLEARANCE: - Section 9.3.4 10. Where pipe passes through holes in platforms, foundations, walls, or floors, the holes shall be sized such that the diameter of the holes is 2 in. (50 mm) larger than the pipe for 1 in. (25 mm) nominal to 31/2 in. (89 mm) nominal and 4 in. (100 mm) larger than the pipe for pipe 4 in. (100 mm) nominal and larger. Clearance from structural members not penetrated or used, collectively or independently, to support the piping shall be at least 2 in. (51 mm). 13. Where clearance is provided by a pipe sleeve, a nominal diameter 2 in. (51 mm) larger than the nominal diameter of the pipe is acceptable for pipe sizes 1 in. (25.4 mm) through 31/2 in. (89 mm), and the clearance provided by a pipe sleeve of nominal diameter 4 in. (102 mm) larger than the nominal diameter of the pipe is acceptable for pipe sizes 4 in. (102 mm) and larger. 9.3.4.3 14. No clearance is necessary for piping passing through gypsum board or equally frangible construction that is not required to have a fire resistance rating. 9.3.4.4 f 15. No clearance is necessary if flexible couplings are located within 1 ft (0.31 m) of each side of a wall, floor, platform, or foundation. 9.3.4.5 SWAY BRACING: - Section 9.3.5 - 9.3.5.8 16. The system piping shall be braced to resist both lateral and longitudinal horizontal seismic loads and to prevent vertical motion resulting from seismic loads. The structural components to which bracing is attached shall be determined to be capable of carrying the added applied seismic loads. Sway braces shall be designed to withstand forces in tension and compression. Bracing shall be attached directly to feed and cross mains. 1 1 17. For feed and cross mains, longitudinal sway bracing shall be spaced a maximum of 80 ft. Later -al sway bracing shall be spaced a maximum of 40 ft. A length of pipe shall not be braced to sections of the building that will move differentially. Restraint of Branch Lines. - Section 9.3.6 18. Wire used for restraint shall be located within 2 ft (610 mm) of a hanger. The hanger closest to a wire restraint shall be of a type that resists upward movement of a branch line. The end sprinkler on a line shall be restrained against excessive vertical and lateral movement. Where upward or lateral movement would result in an impact against the building structure, equipment, or finish materials, branch lines shall be restrained at intervals not exceeding 30 ft ( SPARE SPRINKLERS: - Section 6.2.9 19. The stock of spare sprinklers shall include all types and ratings installed and shall be as follows: a. For systems having less than 300 sprinlders, not fewer than six sprinklers. Approved Plans: 1 set of approved plans, bearing the City of Tigard approval stamp, shall be maintained on the jobsite. The plans shall be available to the Building Division inspectors throughout all phases of construction. 106.3.1 OSSC When submitting revised drawings or additional information, please attach a copy of the enclosed City of Tigard, Letter of Transmittal. The letter of transmittal assists the City of Tigard in tracking and processing the documents. Respectfully / C/ al Henzel Senior Plans Examiner it •
