The rockery should be built in accordance with attach design. - • The rockery should consist of a rock wall that is at least 3 feet thick. The majority of the boulders used to build the rockery should be a minimum of 2 foot in diameter. Smaller • diameter boulders may be used to fill gaps and promote the fit of the larger stones. The first row of boulders should be embedded at least 1.0 foot in to the soil at the base of the wall. • The rockery wall should be backfilled with a free draining 3/4 inch minus crushed rock. The backfill should be compacted to at least 95 percent of the Modified Proctor laboratory maximum (ASTM D 1557 or AASHTO T -180). A 3inch diameter perforated plastic pipe should be laid at the base of the fill behind the first row of boulders. The drain is not expected to have a maximum rate of more than 1 gallon per minute and therefore we recommend it be directed to discharge on the site. • The rockery boulders should be fresh black basalt. The boulders should give a sharp ring when they arc struck with a hammer. Rockeries are erosion protection for slopes that are stable. Rockeries require periodic maintenance to repair frost and potential creep movements.
