Spoke with Mark Grenz this morning about suitable wall backfill materials which would not produce high lateral wall pressures and was informed that the use of the 2 -inch reject material would be acceptable. Contractor was so informed that reject was accepatbel provide that adequate compaction could be reached. Gredvig "Lioudy TEMP. 30's /40's PRE NT I S Bren THE FOLLOWING WAS NOTED: Following yesterdays telephone call with both the general contractor (Phil) and the project civil engineer (Mark Grenz), it was reported that the segmental walls to be built along the east and south property boundaries is indeed a retaining wall. As such, recommended to contractor that the base of the wall system needs to be overexcavated to remove any and all existing uncontrolled fill materials down to firm native subgrade soils. Additionally, the excavation along the base of the new wall should be extended out from the all and equal distance to the depth of overexcavation. Further, all wall and /or slope backfill materials need to be compacted to at least 90 percent except for the area immediately behind the wall which will require the use of small compaction equipment. Stopped by site this morning to check the work. Found that the east and south areas have been excavated as recommended with about 6 inches of overexcavation along the east side and up to 3 feet of overexcavation along the south. Compaction of gravel fills to bring the grade up will be performed with a large vibraplate. Additionally, stripping is still needed between the backside of the east all and the next 5 to 10 feet to the east due to the presence of organics. Observations made at this time found that clearing and stripping has begun to the south of the existing slope along the frontage road and to the east of the existing paved access drive. Excavations of some 12 inches or more were being done to get through the surficial topsoil materials as dell as some underlying existing fill. The easterly perimeter hodever is not being stripped and cleared at this time due to the presence of a poser pole and other constraints. A old septic tank was uncovered near the easterly portion of the proposed building and resulted in a hole of some 6 to 8 feet in width and 6 feet in depth. Contractor plans to bring a hoe -pac to site to backfill import gravel fill into excavation. Additionally, old debris fills with brick and concrete rubble was encountered along the toe of the existing slope where and old drain pipe and drain rock were also encountered. Once this Alas removed, contractor was given approval to begin placement of import gravel fill materials. Fill dill be compacted with a rubber tired smooth drum roller. Will return to site on Monday to resume monitoring the clearing and grubing work. Observations made at this time revealed that excavation and removal of existing surficial fills and old topsoil remnants continues to the east of the existing paved access drive and near the middle portion of the site. Additionally, excavation and clearing has begun to lest of the existing access drive just south of the northerly slope. Existing fills are present along the northerly slope and contractor has removed about two (2) to three (3) feet of subgrade to remove most of the - existing fill soils which contain concrete and asphalt debris. An existing poser line was exposed in this area which feeds the toiler site to the south and contractor dill not encroach too close to it. Import gravel fills are being placed across the northerly portion of the site and leaveled with a backhoe for compaction with the smooth drum roller. Workmanshio appears suitable and top of fill grade was observed to be firm under loaded rock truck load with about 12 inches of gravel fill inplace. Work will continue to remove unsuitable surface materials as site Bork extends further to the south. Again, the easterly perimeter remains unstripped at this time .
