RESOLUTION NO. 08- 3q
A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND THANKING I,:' ARE GARDNER FOR IIER 18 YEARS OF
SERVICE AS THE TIGARD SENIOR CENTER DIRECTOR.
WHEREAS, the City of Tigard contracts with Loaves & Fishes, Inc. to provide nutrition and social service
programs for the elderly and their families which includes dining room and' home-delivered meals,
informational, educational and recreational activities and fiend-raising activities for the program;and
WHEREAS,-GAS, Daren Gardner has served as die Tigard Senior Center's Director since August 1, 1990 and is
retiring from the position on July 31,2008;and
WIIERE-AS, City of Tigard elected and appointed officials wish to recognize the direction and oversight
provided by Karen over the last 18 years and thank her for her selfless service;and
WHEREAS, during the last 18 years the Center programming has grown from providing space for board
games and wood carving to a fiill array of leisure-tune activities wid-i the Center being home to the Tigard
Garden Club, the Tigard Art Club, and many more; and
WHEREAS, in 1990 the meal program was served out of dee Tigard Christian Church, and the program
today pro-rides over 50 meals at the Center with an average of 95 home-delivered meals each day with on-
site prepared foods;and
WHEREAS, under Karen's direction, English as a Second Language Program (ESL) began with one
volunteer, an 84-year old woman, tutoring a 27 year old Clunese woman to read and speak English. This
very successful program continues to grow today. The Tigard Senior Center received the J.C. Penney
Golden Rule Award in 1998 recognizing the impact the Center's ESL tutors make in the community; and
WHEREAS, Karen recently successfully ran the Center's programs out of multiple locations in Tigard as
the Senior Center Building was undergoing a major remodel for over 7 months. The remodeled Center
provides a welcoming space for many more programs and events.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED by the Tigard City Council that:
SECTION 1: The City of Tigard Council and staff members hereby convey their gratitude to Daren
Gardner for her 18 years of direction and oversight provided to the Tigard Senior Center
nutrition and social service programs for the area's seniors.
SECTION 2: The City of Tigard Council and staff members hereby extend congratulations and wishes for
future health and happiness to Karen Gardner as she retires from leading the Senior Center in
Tigard.
