RESOLUTION NO. 86- -2& _
A RESOLUTION WELCOMING THE JAPANESE SCHOOL OF PORTLAND TO ITS NEW LOCATION IN
TIGARD AND PLEDGING ASSISTANCE.
WHEREAS, in August, 1986, the Japanese School of Portland will be moving to
Tuality Junior High School, located in the School District and the City of
Tigard; and
WHEREAS, said school will provide instruction in mathematics and Japanese for
approximately one hundred twenty children of Japanese families temporarily
residing in the Portland metropolis; and
WHEREAS, said school is supported by the Ministry of Education of Japan; and
WHEREAS, the location of said school within Tigard will. increase intercultural
understanding and awareness.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that:
Section 1: The City Council of the City of Tigard wishes to welcome the
Japanese School of Portland to its new located in Tuality Junior High and to
the City of Tigard. On behalf of all City residents, the Council expresses
its support and pledges any assistance within its ability to the success and
vitality of the Japanese School of Portland.

MEMORANDUM

SUBJECT: Japanese School of Portland
The Japanese School of Portland offers Saturday and intensive summer classes
for the children of Japanese families who are temporarily residing in the
metropolitan area. Enrollment is approximately 120.
Sometime in August the school will be moving from its present location in
southeast Portland to larger space in Tuality Jr. High School.
As a goodwill gesture, the City Council may wish to consider adopting a
resolution formally welcoming the school to Tuality Jr. High and to the City
of Tigard. A proposed resolution is attached.
{ If the Council is inclined to adopt this or some other welcoming resolution,
°. it is suggested that an original copy be sent to the school board along with a
cover letter from the Mayor or City Administrator. Although not necessary,
the sending of a small gift, such as a soccer ball or jump rope, would be
especially appropriate to the situation.
The school board is made up of top officials working for Japanese companies
with offices or plants in Portland metropolis. The location of the Japanese
School in Tigard will increase the attractiveness of Tigard,Tualatin and the
I-5 area as sites for Japanese businesses that may be considering locating in E
the metropolitan area. The chairman of the school is Mr. Tadakazu Kumashiro.

SUBJECT: Town Hall Room Reservation, Pacific-American Institute
The Pacific-American Institute, a non-pro-fit business and government exchange
association, will be conducting a series of workshops in the Metro Area for
20 of the top Japanese business and government students. They have arranged
with the City to use our Town Hall meeting room from 9 - noon as follows:
o Monday, 8/4/86 - Thursday, 8/7/86
o Monday, 8/11/86
o Wednesday, 8/13/86
They will be out in time for set-up before the 12:30 Court Sessions. On
Tuesday, 8/12/86 and Thursday, 8/14/86, they will meet elsewhere so as not
to conflict with Court.
