Resolution No. 78-98 CITY OF TIGARD, OREGON RESOLUTION No. 78-__q_g t A RESOLUTION OF THE TIGARD CITY COUNCIL URGING THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO MAINTAIN ITS DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS AND THE MUTUAL DEFENSE TREATY WITH THE REPUBLIC OF CHINA.AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. WHEREAS, the Republic of China was a founding member of the United Nations and has always been a law abiding member of the community of nations; and WHEREAS, The Republic of China ranks 13th among trading partners of the United States and ninth in imports, and currently there is 471 million dollars worth of American investment in the Republic of China; and WHEREAS, the Republic of China is of great importance in the defense of East Asia and the Pacific and has always utilized its military power in the interests of the free world; and WHEREAS, the formal relat onship between the Republic of China and the United States is based on the SR.,JDwC--Unitad States Mutual Defense Treaty of 1954; and WHEREAS, this beautiful country is technologically advanced, culturally diverse, and combines the sophistication of industrialization with the heritage of thousands of years of Chinese culture; and WHEREAS, the Joy Children's Choir from the Republic of China in Taiwan entertained at Tigard Town & Country Days in August, 1978. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE TIGARD CITY COUNCIL THAT: Section 1: The citizens of the City of Tigard and the Tigard City Council wish to express their appreciation of and commendations to the government and people of the Republic of China and express their hope for the continuing goodwill that the people of the United States and the Republic of China have historically enjoyed. Section 2: The President and Congress of the United States make every effort to develop better social and economic relations with the Republic of China Section 3: A copy of this resolution shall be directed to President Carter, Secretary j. of State Vance,,Oregon U. S. Senators Mark 0. Hatfield and Bob Packwood, and Oregon U. S. Representative Les AuCoin and this resolution shall be spread upon the journal of *he City as a permanent record relative to commending the Republic fo China. i PASSED: This /_ day of 1978.
