GeoPacific Engineering Inc. visited the site to review the house foundation excavation subgrade for bearing conditions only. The excavation has been exposed for a few weeks and has been exposed to wet and freezing weather. The subgrade currently probes soft in the upper few inches and medium stiff for at least a foot. Diligent mucking of the softened soils should be performed immediately prior to pouring concrete. After the recommended mucking is performed, the observed subgrade was considered adequate for spread foundation support to a maximum allowable bearing pressure of more than 1,500 psf. Some gravel backfill may be necessary to laterally support small vertical cuts within the crawlspace. No deck or column footings were observed at the rear of the home by GeoPacific up to this time.
