RE: SOIL ENGINEER'S DENSITY TESTING SUMMARY LUBY BUILDING SITE WORK TIGARD, OREGON GeoPacific Engineering, Inc. performed on -call testing at the above referenced project for the period from April 30, 2008 through June 23, 2008. Proofrolling was performed on fills beneath the streets, and density testing was performed on storm drain trench fill, asphalt concrete for Hermosa Way and the parking lot, and retaining wall backfill for Lock -n -Load walls designed by David A. Hall /Structural Engineering. A summary of our density testing and field reports are attached. Based on our test results, tested areas met the required project compaction. The field soil inspection summary contains our observations on geogrid type and placement. Our reports pertain to the materials and locations tested /inspected only. We trust this information meets your needs. Sincerely, GeoPacific Engineering, Inc. gy p PROFt , e x, c5' • 1 •4c . E z. ' f , OREGON 7 v4 41/7 o , \ EXPIRES: 06/30/20 James D. Imbrie, P.E., C.E.G. Geotechnical Engineer Attachments: Field Soil inspection Summary Summary of Field Soil Density Tests Summary of Field Asphaltic Concrete Density Tests Field Soil Observation Summary Pace I of? Field Soil Observation Summary Project: Luby Building Job number: OR 08 -1473 Project address: 7450 SW Hermoso Way, Tigard Daily Reports 5/15/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site to observe Lock -n -Load wall subgrade soils in the wall keyway cut. Currently areas where wall subgrade has been cut to bottom of wall subgrade include the southern section of the front, right parking wall north to the tree zone and the front left parking wall. Exposed soils in the notes areas consist of stiff native brown, moist clayey silt. Soils appear to have adequate bearing strength to support applied wall load. GeoPacific should observe 6 inch leveling base course compaction prior to wall construction. 5/22/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site to observe wall subgrade . soils at front left and front right wall areas. At subgrade elevation, soils exposed consist of native brown clayey silt, stiff, very moist. Soils appear to be stiff enough to provide adequate bearing capacity for applied wall loads. 6 inches of 3/4 " -0 Tigard Sand & Gravel has been tightly compacted into wall base and appears adequate to begin wall construction in these areas. 5/28/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site at 11:00 am to observe geogrid installation at the 1st grid layer on the front right parking wall. Grid lengths are 5.5 feet long, exceeding required grid length. Grid type is Strata Grid 55, oriented correctly. 1:36 pm was onsite to observe grid installation at the front right parking wall. The 2nd grid layer has been installed at the top of the 3rd block exceeding recommended grid lengths. South of the tree zone grid lengths were measured at 5.5 feet. Rounding the corner to the east and then to the north grid lengths are 9 feet. Grids have been installed in the correct orientations. Observed wall drain piping has been installed at the keyway cut and tied into street storm lines on the south end. Pipe consists of a sock covered 4 inch plastic pipe. 5/29/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site to observe geogrid installation at the front left parking wall. Geogrid has been installed at the top of block 1 measuring 9 feet long. Grids have been oriented correctly and are strata grid 55. The drain pipe has been installed at the wall keyway backcut. 5/31/08: GeoPacific technician, Jason Burgess, was on site a few times to observe construction of the northeast set of Lock -n -Load retaining walls. Compaction testing on the crushed rock backfill has been passing better than 95% of modified proctor, on areas tested. South wall, running east to west has a large fir tree behind it, the roots are very large and are protruding almost the wall face. Wall contractor has been doing a pretty good job of working around them and still placing compactive effort on the backfill. Geogrid has been placed in the center of the 2nd block all the way around the wall. It is not quite as long on the south wall because of the roots, maybe 3 feet. The http://192.168.0.1/geopacific/admin/view_soil_field_report.pl 7/24/2008 Field Soil Observation Summary Pate 2 of2 rest of the grids are between 4 & 5 feet deep, placed the correct direction (Syntene 55). Upon second visit wall contractor has placed 4 to 5 foot deep geogrid in the middle of the 4th block. 6/10/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site to observe street improvement on SW Hermosa Way 1/2 street. Observed subgrade soils on the north /south section, consist of native brown clayey silt, very stiff. At the bend to the east /west section subgrade soils consist of a gray -blue clayey silt fill soil, medium stiff to very stiff. These fill soils were likely placed during time of street construction. The observed existing rock section in this location was only 3/4 inches which is likely responsible for observed crumbling asphalt. The cured rock section being installed consists of 15 inches of loose rock over geotextile fabric and 4 inches of asphalt. In my opinion overexcavation of the observed fill soils is not required. Should soft spots develop and show during base rock proofroll, cost of localized overexcavation will be far less than thickening of the current rock section. This cost balance is the primary motivation for me to not recommend whole area overexcavation as the majority of observed subgrade soils are stiff to very stiff. 6/20/08: GeoPacific geologist, Ben Cook, was on site to observe a proofroll at SW Hermosa Way 1/2 street improvement base rock section. Base rock section is visually well compacted and appears to have adequate moisture content. Proofrolling was done with a haul truck loaded with native on -site soils from a slope cut. Approximate vehicle weight 40 -50 pounds. No movement of pumping was visible during the inspection. Base rock appears adequately compacted for A/C paving.
