There are a number of recommendations contained here that are important for both using and maintaining your equipment. Please read this manual in its entirety to avoid potentially hazardous conditions for your personnel or damage to the booth itself. Only qualified personnel should be permitted to operate or maintain a spray booth. Use of this manual as a training aid is highly recommended. The final responsibility of establishing the training and standards for booth personnel rests with you. Please read the entire Operating and Maintenance Manual before operating the equipment to ensure proper use and maintenance. -1 Bleeker Bros., Inc GENERAL ASSEMBLY INSTRUCTIONS Each booth is supplied with an Assembly Drawing, Parts List, and detailed Assembly Instructions. Refer to the documents frequently during booth construction to avoid delays and damaged components. 1. Identify and check each part as shown on the Assembly Drawing and Parts List. We recommend the parts be laid out in the order they will be needed during assembly. 2. Determine the exact location for the booth. Be sure to follow applicable site drawings and local fire codes. Mark the outline of the booth on the floor to provide a reference during assembly. 3. Usually starting at the plenum end of the booth and working toward the booth entry is the best approach. Be sure to follow the detailed Assembly Instructions closely. Note: To provide easiest access, install the exhaust fan(s) before beginning the working depth. 4. Assemble ductwork as required per the site drawing. (For general requirements see the Code Requirements section of this document.) 5. All sheet metal connections are made with the 5/16" x 3/4" truss head bolts supplied. Tighten all bolts and nuts after the booth is lined up and all walls are plumb and square. 6. Secure the floor angles to the concrete with Ramset shots or concrete anchors on 24 inch centers. . . • • 7. Install the tempered glass windows and lights fixtures. The proper orientation of the fan is clearly marked on the fan housing. ❑ Check the direction of rotation of the motor. ❑ Check that all electrical controls are installed and working properly. This includes the door interlocks, lighting controls, solenoid valves, and pressure or air flow switches if required. a Check that all filters have been installed and are sealing properly in the filter frames. Any gaps where air can flow through will also allow paint to pass through. ❑ Check for missing bolts, nuts, or openings. ❑ All seams on an enclosed spray booth should be caulked to provide an air tight enclosure. Apply the caulking sparingly (use small beads) so that no large bumps or beads appear. Bleeker Bros., Inc CODE REQUIREMENTS Following all local and national codes is the responsibility of the installer. Fire, electrical, and building codes vary from state to state and from city to city. Consult local authorities before installation of a paint spray booth. They can help determine what equipment is necessary to meet their codes, provide guidance for electrical and fire protection systems, and they can assist with the location of the booth in the paint shop and in relation to property lines. Bleeker spray booths are designed to help you comply with the requirements of the National Fire Protection Associations (NFPA), the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA), and the Uniform Fire Code (UFC). NFPA (33.8.11) and UFC require a "NO SMOKING" sign in large letters on a contrasting background is to be conspicuously posted at all spray booth spray areas and paint storage rooms. Uniform Fire Code 1997 Part V Special Processes Article 45 Application of Flammable 4501.1 Scope. Locations and areas where the following activities are conducted shall be in accordance with Article 45. 1. The application of flammable or combustible paint, varnish, lacqu7er, stain or other flammable or combustible liquid applied as spray by compressed air, airl3ss or hydraulic atomization, steam, electrostatic or other methods or means in continuos or intermittent process. 2. Dip tank operations in which articles or material are passed through contents of tanks, vats or • • • containers of flammable or combustible liquids, including coating, finishing, treatment and • similar processes, and • • • 3. For permits for spraying or dipping operations utilizing flammable. .. •� � � • • combustible liquids, or the application of combustible powders regulated by Article 45, . • • see section 105, Permit s.1. 4501.4 Smoking. Smoking shall be prohibited in spray - finishing areas and in the vicinity of dip tanks. NO SMOKING signs with lettering of approved size shall be conspicuously posted in such areas. 4501.5 Welding Warning Signs. Conspicuous signs will the following warning shall be posted in the vicinity of spraying areas, dipping operations and paint storage rooms: 3 -1 ,rt= Bleeker Bros., Inc �.1 NO WELDING The use of welding or cutting equipment in or near this area is dangerous because of fire and explosion hazards. Welding and cutting shall be done only under the supervision of the person in charge. 4501.6 Electrical Wiring and Equipment. Electrical wiring and equipment shall be in accordance with Article 45 and the Electrical Code. 4501.7 Storage, Use and Handling of Flammable and combustible Liquids. The storage, use and handling of flammable and combustible liquids shall be in accordance with Article 79. Section 4502 — SPRAY FINISHING 4502.1 Location of Spray - finishing operations. When conducted in buildings used for assembly, educational, institutional or residential occupancies, spray - finishing operations shall be located in a spraying room protected with an approved automatic sprinkler system and separated vertically and horizontally form other areas in accordance with the Building Code. In other occupancies, spray - finishing operations shall be conducted in a spray booth, spraying area or spraying room approved for such use. Limited spraying areas for touch -up or spot painting may be approved provided they meet the requirements of Article 45. See section 4502.6 4502.2 Spray Booths. • • • • 4502.2.1 Materials. Exception One individual booth not exceeding 500 square feet. 4502.2.3 Surfaces. Interior surfaces of spray booths shall be smooth and continuous without edges and otherwise designed to prevent pocketing of residue, to allow free passage of exhaust air from all parts of the interior and to facilitate washing and cleaning without injury. 3 -2 Bleeker Bros. , Inc 4502.2.1 Floors. Floors of spray booths shall be of noncombustible material or shall be covered with a noncombustible, non - sparking material of such character to facilitate safe cleaning and removal of residue. 4502.2.2 Baffles. If installed, baffle plates shall be of a noncombustible material readily removable or accessible to facilitate cleaning and designed to provide an even flow of air through the booth and to prevent the deposit of over spray before it enters the exhaust duct. Baffle plates shall not be installed in the exhaust ducts. 4502.2.3 Deflectors. Spray booths having a frontal area of more than 9 square feet and not equipped with doors shall have a metal deflector or fire curtain not less than 4 -1/2 inches (114.3 mm) deep installed at the upper outer edge of the booth over the booth opening. 4502.2.4 Separation. Spray booths shall be separated from other operations by not less than 3 feet (914 mm), by a wall or partition, or by a greater distance as required by the chief. 4502.2.5 Clear space. All portions of spray booths shall be readily available for cleaning, and a clear space of not less than 3 feet (914) shall be kept free of storage or combustible materials. 4502.2.6 Light fixtures. When spray booths are illuminated, fixed lighting units which transmit light into the spray booth = through heat - treated or hammered wire glass shall be used. Glass panels shall be arranged to minimize breakage and so that normal accumulation of residue on the exposed surface of a panel will not be raised to a dangerous temperature by heat from the source of illumination. • • • • 4502.2.7 Exit doors. Spray booths using dry filters and dry filter rolls and the use and, ho @L.. • such filters shall be in accordance with section 4502.3 •••• • • •••• �,. 4502.3.2 Maintaining air velocity. Spray booths equipped with a filter roll which is automatically advanced when the air velocity is reduced to less than 100 lineal feet 30 480 mm) per minute shall be arranged to cause shut down of spraying operations if the filter roll fails to automatically advance. 3 -3 /': Bleeker Bros., Inc Visible gages or audible alarm devices shall be installed to indicate that the required air velocity is maintained in accordance with Section 4502.5. 4502.3.3 Filter disposal. Discarded filter pads shall be immediately removed to a safe, well detached location or placed in a water filled metal container and disposed of at the close of each day's operation. 4502.3.4 Filter Obstruction. Articles being sprayed shall be positioned in a spray booth in as manner which does not obstruct collection of overspray. 4502.3.5 Spontaneous ignition. Spray booths using dry filters shall not be used for spraying material which are known to be highly susceptible to spontaneous heating and ignition. Filters shall be changed prior to spraying materials which could react with other materials previously collected. Examples of potentially reactive combinations include lacquer when combined with varnishes, stains or primers. See also Section 4502.9.5 4502.3.6 Filter material. Clean filters shall be noncombustible or of an approved type. 4502.4 Sources of Ignition. 4502.4.1 General. Open -flame and spark - producing equipment shall not be located in spraying areas and shall not be located within 20 feet (6096 mm) of spraying areas unless separated by a partition. Exception being, Equipment allowed by Sections 4502.10, 4504.1 and 4504.2. 4502.4.2 Hot surfaces. Space- heating appliances, steam pipes and hot surfaces shall not be • • • located in spraying areas where deposits of combustible residues could •readiy•••• accumulate. • • • • • • • •• • 4502.4.3 Electrical wiring and equipment. •••• • • •• • • •• •• 4502.4.3.1 Areas subject to overspray deposits. Electrical wiring and equipment not subject to deposits of combustible residues but locate in a spraying area shall be of an explosion proof type approved for use in a Class 1 hazardous location in accordance with the Electrical Code. 3 -4 Bleeker Bros., Inc 4502.4.3.2 Continued Electrical wiring, motors and other equipment located outside of, but within 20 feet of, a spraying area and not separated from the spraying area by partitions shall not produce sparks under normal operating conditions. Electric lamps in such areas shall be totally enclosed to prevent the falling of hot particles and shall be protected from physical damage by suitable guards or by location. Such areas shall be considered a Class I, Division 2 hazardous location in accordance with the Electrical Code. 4502.4.3.3Portable Electric lamps. Portable electric lamps shall not be used in spraying areas during spraying operations. Portable electric lamps, if used during cleaning or repairing operations, shall be of a type approved for hazardous locations. 4502.4.4 Grounding. Metal parts of spray booths, exhaust ducts and piping systems conveying Class I or !! liquids shall be electrically grounded in accordance with the Electrical Code. 4502.5 Ventilation of Spray Booths and Spraying Areas. 4502.5.1 General. Spraying areas shall be provided with mechanical ventilation adequate to prevent the dangerous accumulation of vapors. Mechanical ventilation shall be kept in operation at all times while spraying operations are being conducted and for a sufficient time thereafter to allow vapor from drying coated articles and finishing materiel residue to be exhausted. Spraying equipment shall be interlocked with the ventilation of the spraying area such that spraying operations cannot be conducted unless the ventilation system is in operation. Air exhausted from spraying operations shall no be re- circulated. • • • • • • 4502.5.2 Air velocity. Electric motors driving exhaust fans shall not be placed inside ducts. Fan rotating elements shall be nonferrous or non - sparking or casings shall consist of or be lined with such material. Belts shall not enter ducts or booths unless belts and pulleys within a duct or booth are tightly enclosed.. 4502.5.5 Duct material and termination point. Exhaust ducts shall be constructed of steel having a thickness in accordance with Table 4502.5 -A The termination point for exhaust ducts discharging to the atmosphere shall not be less than the following: 1. Ducts conveying explosive or flammable vapors, fumes or dusts: 30 feet from property line; 10 feet from openings into the building; 6 feet from exterior walls or roofs; 30 feet from combustible walls or openings into the building which are in the direction of the exhaust discharge; 10 feet above adjoining grade. 2. Other product- conveying outlets; 10 feet from property line; 3 feet from exterior wall or roof; 10 feet from openings into the building; 10 feet above adjoining grade. 3. Cleanout openings shall be provided at intervals which allow through cleaning of ducts. Cleanout openings in ducts and pipes shall be equipped with tight fitting sliding or hinged doors constructed of metal which is equal to or greater than the thickness of the duct or pipe. If a 3 -prong to 2 -prong adapter is used or if the ground in the AC receptacle is not connected, then a separate ground wire . must be run to a metal building member (electrical conduit, water line, steel building support, etc.). NOTE: Because the building electrical system may not always be properly grounded, using the alternate building ground connection is a good practice in all situations. 3.
