December 12, 2003 MEMO TO: Rudy Schuver (SLX Architects) FROM: Jonathan L Ricket PROJECT: C.F. Tigard Elementary School SUBJECT: City of Tigard — Mechanical Permit Comments DISTRIBUTION: PAE File (MDS, MEF, VET) This memorandum is in response to the City of Tigard Mechanical Permit comments, Dated December 2, 2003. 3. RTU -3, RTU -4 are ACCU -2 are within 10 feet of the edge of the building. If the parapet wall is not 42 inches higher than the roof deck a 42 inch high guard will be required.... The Guards are required. RTU -4 and ACCU -2 to be moved to provide 10 feet clearance to edge of roof (refer to Mechanical Revision Drawing RM -1, RM -2, RM -3). RTU -3 unit supplied by contractor maybe shorter than the basis of design, all access panels have working distance in front that exceeds 10 feet of the roof edge. Diagonal distance from the corner of the unit will be approximately 8 feet. Request that the City accept this as meeting the requirements of the Code. PARTIALLY ACCEPTED, Provide a revised sheet S2.3C indicating new location of unit and EF -5 will be required to be relocated. Drawing Sheet M2.3B shows EF -5 further away than 10 feet from a roof edge. Revision Drawings RM -7, RM -8 show relocation of EF -8, EF -10, EF -11 EF -13 to provide 10 feet clearance to edge of roof. No other mechanical equipment appears to be located within 10 feet of the roof edge. 6. Clarify makeup air for the kitchen grease hood. The make up air shall be connected to the exhaust hood in such a manner that the hood will not operate until makeup air is provided. Section 508.1 OMSC. Make up air is provided by roof top package unit RTU -4 through terminal unit TU -4 -103 which serves the kitchen area. Exhaust fan EF -8 serves the kitchen hood. The DDC control system will start and stop both EF -8 and AHU -1 on the same schedule (refer to Specification section 15950 Paragraph 3.2 ). OMSC 508.1 requires "electronic interlock" between make up air source and exhaust. Request that the City accept the DDC programming as the interlock between these devices. PARTIALLY ACCEPTED, Provide CFM quantities that clarify the amount of outside air being supplied for make -up air and the outside air for the occupants. Please document the request as an alternate method as referenced in section 105.2 of the OMSC. Rudy Schuver December 12, 2003 Page 2 Request that the flowing method be considered as an alternative method (Under the provisions of 105.2 of the OMSC) to achieve the requirement that the kitchen exhaust fan and the make up —air supply fan be "electronically interlocked ": As stated previously the Kitchen Grease fan and the Supply unit (RTU -4) are coordinated on the same time schedule through the DDC control system. This effectively assures that a source of make -up air is available when the Hood fan is in operation. RTU -4 is scheduled for a minimum of 5,700 CFM of Outside Air. The supply air for the terminal units will contain a mix of outside air and returned air. The percentage can vary from 100% OSA to 63% OSA depending amount of air that is required to condition the space. Make -up air for kitchen exhaust (1500 CFM Grease Hood and 615 CFM Dishwasher) is from the kitchen supply diffusers (2000CFM max. to 600 CFM min.). When the supply diffusers are supplying less than the maximum (VAV operation) the remainder of the make -up air is from the adjoining Multipurpose Room via the serving area opening. Total system exhaust (individual roof exhaust fans including the kitchen) capacity is 2,945CFM. The remainder of the relief air (5,700CFM — 2,945CFM — 1000 CFM Pressurization) will be exhausted by the Rooftop Unit RTU -4 relief fan and dampers. Mixed outside air (100% to 63 %) and return air is also supplied to the other spaces, via the zone terminal units, in a quantities to meet the cooling/heating and minimum ventilation requirements. 7. Cleanouts are required to be spaced not more than 20 feet apart. Section 506.3.11 OMSC. The ... . Provide adequate cleanouts. Drawing M3.1C, hexagonal keyed NOTE 8, reads: "GREASE HOOD DUCTWORK. PROVIDE CONSTRUCTION AND CLEANOUTS IN ACCORDANCE WITH INTERNATIONAL MECHANICAL CODE WITH OREGON AMMENDMENTS. (LATEST EDITION) ". The contract drawings are diagrammatic in nature and may not necessarily reflect the configuration of the installed ductwork. Therefore to assure that appropriate cleanouts are provided at 20 ft intervals and at elbows we elected to use a keyed note. Contractor produced Shop Drawings are specified and will be reviewed for conformance with the Code. Request that the City accept the keyed hexagonal NOTE 8 in lieu of detailing all required cleanouts. NOT ACCEPTED, Indicate cleanout location on the drawings Cleanout locations provided (Refer to Revision Drawing RM -4).
