Its depth is about 22 feet, deeper than what normally can be excavated by a typical trackhoe. My recommendations are as follows: 1. Plug the bottom of the well with 3 feet of concrete. 2. Fill the drywell to within about 3 feet of the top of existing subgrade or top of crawl space grade whichever is lower in elevation. 3. Plug the top of the drywell with 3 feet of concrete. 4. Lot generally appears to consist of firm, native brown silt. Probed the footprint with fiberglass rod; observed nil penetration. However, in the northeast corner of the footprint, observed the presence of a well (42 inches in diameter; about 20 feet deep, more or less) that appears to have been filled with lean concrete (controlled density fill). Probed the perimeter around the well; observed nil penetration. [rev. Engineer's note: The 8/23/07 memo called for spanning across the well area with a re- design by the Structural Engineer. This recommendation is no longer required since the well was fully filled with lean concrete /controlled density fill and Grant found firm native soil around the well.] At the northeast corner, a partial concrete stemwall was excavated and partially demolished to accomodate the new footing. About 2 -1/2 feet, more or less, of the stemwall still remains along with the backfill outside of the stemwall. There is a potential risk of settlement for pouring the new footing on the 2 -1/2 feet of backfill and then stepping over the wall down to the crawl space before stepping up on the other side. The backfill on either side of the crawl space stem wall, even though is only 2 -1/2 feet deep, more or less, still represents a source of unknown settlement because this backfill probably was not compacted in lifts. [rev. Engineer's Note: Additional examination and observation of this crawl space disclosed \he presence of firm native soil and not backfill at the outside stemwall. There is no footing at the bottom of the stemwall and the stemwall appears to have been "neat- poured "; hence, the soil outside the stemwall is firm, native soil.
