Date: August 25, 2004 Subject: Hole cut in joist
This Engineering Field Directive is issued Buena Vista Homes for the single family residence
being constructed on Lot 20 at the Durham Oaks subdivision in Tigard, Oregon regarding a hole
cut in a floor joist.
The 3'Jz" diameter hole was cut in one of the 11W RFPI -20 floor joists about 4" from the hanger
at the end approximately as located on the attached framing plan. The joist in question is
continuous across the width of the house bearing on the interior garage wall. The end of the
beam with the hole is very lightly loaded. The hole should not violate the structural integrity of
the floor framing. The joist with the hole is acceptable.

met with Jay at the site on June 22, 2004 to review the tree of concern, a 38"
D.B.H. Douglas Fir in very poor condition having been topped approximately 10
years ago and a dogleg 22' up from an early break,
At issue is the need to build a house on the lot and the requirement to install the
homes foundation approximately 8' away from the trunk.
•
An air - spaded trench has been dug to determine roots extending into the house
footprint.
T understand Walter Knapp is involved with this project as well as the City of
Tigard% Arborist Matt Stein. I have been asked to provide an opinion as to how to
install a foundation on this site.
We have had very good success with engineered bridged foundations designed to
roots. By doing large ng o I be lieve the tree will remain standing unless it fails during a

storm event (which any tree Could).
