An approximate plan map of the site is shown in Figure A_ We understand the basement is located in a future parking area and the area is to be paved after backfilling. Our recommendations are outlined below. Demolition and Backfill Recommendations 1. The existing concrete basement walls should be removed and hauled off site. Care should be taken to prevent damage to existing sewer and /or gas lines observed at the south side of the basement. The basement floor should be demolished to provide adequate drainage. Concrete debris does not need to be removed, provided large voids are not left after demolishing .nd the rubble is tracked to a well -keyed state by heavy equipment. 2. Complete exploratory test pits in the bottom of the excavation under the direction of the geotechnical engineer. Two shallow test pits are anticipated, but this may vary depending on actual findings of the test pits. 3. Plug existing drains or other abandoned piping with grout or concrete. 4. Place baekfill material on the well- keyed, prepared surface of the excavation. The walls of the excavation. shculd be benched if sloughing occurs. Sloughed material may be used as backfill only if it meets the following requirements_ Backfill should consist of dean, well- graded granular material (crushed rock and sand) free of organics and deleterious material, with less than 5% by weight passing the No. 200 sieve. Three - inch -minus material should be placed at the first lift and subsequent lifts should be up to a maximum of 3 -inch material. The material shall be approved by the geotechnical engineer prior to placing. Place in lifts no more than 1 foot thick (loose) when compacted with large, riding, compaction equipment, or 8 inches thick (loose) when compacted with hand compaction equipment (e.g., jumping jack, plate compactor). Prior to placing the initial backfill lift, a geotechnical engineer should be present to observe the recommended test pit explorations and the bottom of the basement to determine that conditions are suitable to begin the backfill operation. 2. Field density tests shall be performed every 2 vertical feet of placed fill and at finished grade. Density testing should conform to the nuclear density method ASTM 0-2922. I did not observed any distinguishable petroleum hydrocarbons as staining on the surface of the concrete floor or on the surface of the water. Therefore, in consultation with the DEQ (Andree Pollock, Manager of the UST Cleanup and Compliance Section)(personal communication, 5/4/2000), we intend to pressure wash the concrete floor with hot water and remove the accumulated and resulting liquid with a vacuum truck immediately prior to backfllling. I am confident that this action will mitigate any future concerns regarding the potential contact of water with the concrete basement floor.
