Dear Sherri,
I cannot honor your request to "close out" your company from the permit to replace
a furnace at the Cairy residence at 13970 SW Bull Mountain Road, Tigard.
Your company is the contractor of record for the work for which a correction notice
is still outstanding and, as such, is responsible for making any corrections.
If the owner refuses to allow progress on the permit, the permit will expire six
months after the last inspection. That will be recorded in our permit tracking system
as status "EXPIRED ". This might have ramifications in the future if an incomplete
permit delays the closing of a sale of the property until the permit is satisfied.
I don't know if this is an unlined masonry chimney or not, but if it is, the combustion
gases and condensation will have a deleterious effect on the mortar binding the
bricks. Over an extended time, it can weaken the masonry structure and some of the
bricks may become loose. If the chimney is lined and simply too large, the furnace
will not vent properly to the outside and will create excessive condensation.
I urge you to contact the owner again after receipt of this letter and explain that this
is a simple installation (properly sized liner) and should not interrupt their schedules
significantly. The benefits, safety, and longevity of the chimney are well worth the
time and effort needed to complete the installation per the Mechanical Code.
