Wilcox, P.E. WEATHER: Cloudy /Showers, —60° F PURPOSE OF VISIT: Residence Pad Subgrade Conditions PROJECT GEOTECHNICAL REPORT: Report of Geotechnical Investigation, dated November 16, 2007, prepared by Carlson Geotechnical (CGT). Site Visit on October 30, 2008 arrived on -site at about 9:00 a.m. at the request of Brian Smith with Pacific Groundworks (PG). The purpose of my visit was to observe residence pad subgrade conditions. l met with Juan on -site. During my visit, I observed that excavation was underway for the proposed single family residence. The following summarizes my observations this morning: • Based on my conversations with Juan and review of site staking, excavation was about 80 percent complete for the proposed residence. Additional excavation was required along the south portion (area of deck footings) of the residence area. • The excavation consisted of one bench, which was generally level to slightly sloped to the east. The depth of the excavation ranged from about 3V2 to 4% feet below top -of- asphalt elevation within the private roadway directly north of the residence area. • The exposed soils in general consisted of native, brown /gray, moist, lean clay (CL), with two exceptions (see next bullet). Using a % -inch diameter foundation rod, I probed the exposed native lean clay subgrade and in general I was unable to penetrate more than about 3 inches using strong pressure, indicating medium stiff to better soil consistencies. • Two exceptions were noted during today's visit: , o An approximate 6 -foot (north- south) by 10 -foot (east - west), heavily rooted area within the SW portion of the excavation. It appeared that the rooted area may had been associated with a previous tree / root ball. I observed Juan over - excavate the rooted soils with the on -site, track - mounted excavator. Over- excavation depths of about 1 /2 to 'A feet were necessary in order to remove the organics and expose the native, medium stiff to better, lean clay (CL). o Undocumented, clayey gravel fill was exposed within an approximate 5 -foot (north- south) by 30- foot (east -west) area located along the north edge of the excavation. It appeared that the clayey gravel fill was associated with NCL item #1 (uncontrolled fill) as indicated in our field report dated December 10, 2007. I observed Juan over- excavate the uncontrolled fill with the on -site, track- / mounted excavator. Over - excavation depths of about 3 to 6 inches were necessary in order to remove the uncontrolled fill and expose the native, medium stiff to better, lean clay (CL). • Juan indicated that the over- excavated areas would not be backfilled with structural fill. Juan indicated that excavation would likely be completed later today, and requested that I return to the site in the late afternoon hours or early the following morning (10/31/08) to continue observations. I left the site at about 9:25 a.m. E� Site Visit on October 31, 2008 I returned to the site at about 8:00 a.m. as requested by Juan. I observed that excavation was nearly complete within the proposed residence area. Additional cleanout of loose /stockpiled soils was needed within the east 1 4 of the residence area. Excavation along the proposed south perimeter fooling line, as well as the 8 deck column footings (excavation protrusions), was complete. The exposed soils consisted of native, brown, lean clay (CL). Juan indicated that the loose soils would be removed later this morning, and requested that I return to the site later in the day to conclude observations. I left the site at about 8:15 a.m. t returned to the site at about 11:15 a.m. I observed that excavation was complete within the eastern portion of the residence pad. The exposed soils consisted of native, brown /gray, moist, lean clay (CL). Using the same foundation rod, I probed the exposed native lean clay subgrade and in general I was unable to penetrate more than about 2 inches using strong pressure, indicating medium stiff to better soil consistencies. I left the site at 10:20 a.m. Conclusions of Site Visits Based on my observations and probing, the residence pad subgrade soils were prepared in general accordance with our recommendations. If fill is to be placed within the residence area, and used for support of footings and/or floor slabs, the fill should be placed and compacted in general accordance with the referenced geotechnical report.
