Dear Warren: O N O N CC; At your request, we have performed an analysis of a portion of the second floor and roof framing of the Providence Data Center in Tigard. Our analysis was limited to a particular area where it is o x proposed to install a new computer room. This is an L- shaped zone in the south end of the building bounded by Grid A, Grid 3, Grid E, Grid 4, a line eight feet north of Grid C and Grid 6. E This area lies within a larger zone provided with raised access flooring that was originally intended for similar uses. Our analysis is based on Drawings A3.2 and A9.2 provided by Elaine 0. E Dabrowski of Anderson & Dabrowski Architects. These drawings includes a floor plan of the 0. proposed installation with weights of the various types of equipment and a ceiling plan indicating c ® the proposed duct layout. We have also been given a sketch showing a proposed method for CO suspending new ducts from the roof structure. Our conclusions are as follows: N 3 1. The composite concrete slab on metal deck should have considerable reserve capacity o 2 it under the proposed loading. ul CO V • P m • N 0 2. Without exception the principal girders and joist girders (spanning north-south) should 3 P P P g J s g (P ) M have considerable reserve capacity under the proposed loading. 0 •0 3. All of the open -web joists and all of the wide -flange purlins (spanning east -west) should have significant reserve capacity under the proposed loading. It appears that none of these members will be loaded to more than 91 percent of allowable load. Most of these Group members will have substantial reserve capacity. It appears that the revised arrangement Mackenzie' of the server racks distributes the load more evenly compared with the arrangement we Incorporated analyzed in 2002. 4. Punching shear failure of the slab due to concentrated loads from the access floor system is not to be expected. Group Mackenzie 5. We assume detailed design of the trapeze assemblies to be the responsibility of the contractor. b. If re- roofing has been performed over the life of this building, this has to have been on a complete tear -off and replacement basis, or, at worst, such that the accumulation of roofing materials does not have a weight in excess of 3.5 psf. c. No rooftop mechanical units not part of the original design may have been installed on the area of the roof in question. We conclude that the floor system is capable of safely supporting the proposed equipment arranged as shown in the drawing provided. We also conclude that the roof structure is capable of supporting the proposed new duct loads provided the stated conditions are satisfied. If any of these conditions is not satisfied, a more detailed analysis will be necessary to pinpoint areas of weakness and specify necessary reinforcements. As mentioned in the earlier report, you may wish to keep in mind that the area bounded by Grid A, Grid 4, a line 10 feet north of Grid B and Grid 6 was originally designed for very heavy loads and could be used to support loads well in excess of those currently proposed. We advise that if you do decide on a change in layout, this office should be asked to review the revised floor plan. Please be aware that the analysis we performed was limited in scope. It deals only with the zone described and applies only to the rack layout we evaluated. Assumptions were made regarding floor loadings in the areas surrounding this zone to reach conclusions about members falling on the perimeter of the zone. On this occasion we have been able to review connection designs. Detail books not currently extant in the Group Mackenzie archives were provided by Dale Golston. Our review turned up a number of details which might be targeted for strengthening if a seismic upgrade: is ever undertaken, notably Details 24FF and 25FF, but nothing which would suggest unacceptable performance solely under gravity loading of the intensity now proposed. As before, we have assumed that the columns are adequate. Investigation of the access floor system is outside the scope of this work. Please call if you require clarification on any point.
