01/08/2024 - Minutes Tigard Youth Advisory Council Meeting Minutes 1/8/24, 5-6pm Tigard Library Burgess Community Room Present: Aréana Mann (President) Chelsy Xiloj (School Outreach Officer) Scarlett Xiloj (Media Officer) Chloe Wilson (Treasurer) Shriya Myneni (Vice President) Madi Vogel Kim Vargas Ayla Leniger Aubrey Nunn Absent: Molly Fast Excused: N/A Vacant Positions: none City Team Present: Alex Richardson, Management Analyst Called to order: 5:00pm • Regular business: Climate Change Conversation with Kenny Asher, Community Development Director: Past apathy, ignorance, and lack of action from adults Most emissions from Tigard are from burning natural gas for warming buildings and transportation Food waste that isn’t composted emits greenhouse gases Some schools are trying to install solar panels and others are trying to raise awareness An impromptu poll shows that literally everyone thinks of climate change and nearly everyone is worried about it Climate change can feel too big to solve Out of sight, out of mind Because it isn’t talked about in the mainstream, climate change is often ignored Youth know about climate change to an extent, but it always feels so big and confusing Public pressure from individuals joining groups that join coalitions that join parties can fix this in the future, it may not now, but it will Email him for the opportunity or guidance to do more Figure out where and who sustainable conversations about climate change and action can happen Conversations about climate adaptation or extreme climate changes Conversations with social justice groups about how climate change impacts impoverished communities Conversations with people outside of typical climate change groups Egg Hunt at 8:30-10:30 am Who’s interested Chloe Chelsey Scarlett Meals at the Good Neighbor Center People interested will be emailed Chloe Aubrey Kai Shriya Madi Kim Areana Prep time would be from 5-6 pm Teen Library Council (regarding Youth Government Forum) Table with resources related to voting, democracy, equity issues, and whatever else they pull together It will be on March 3rd from 1-3 pm Referencing ballot measures ranging from schools to libraries Oregon Youth Summit February 2nd Teen Councils from all over Oregon meet in Salem Juneteenth and Pride A listening session on January 24th on Wednesday from 6-7 pm regarding Juneteenth and then 7-8 pm regarding Pride Festival Upcoming Events: Pride & Juneteenth Listening Session Wednesday, Jan 24, 6-8pm at the Library. There’s also a survey you can take if you can’t come to the Session What’s on Your Ballot?
